I was told by an automotive engineer whom I contact regularly with, to accelerate to 35MPH (immediately after brake job), and hit the brakes firmly (but not enough to activate the ABS). Repeat the process for 12 times. Then, drive for several miles to cool off, then repeat the process again.

The idea behind this is to heat the rotors enough to burn off any contaminants from the brake job and to burnish the rotors for the best finish, and deposit a lite layer of pad material on the rotors.

When doing a complete brake job its recomended NOT to do that. Most rotors want you to heat cycle teh rotors first. (it does make a difference in my experiance) I no matter if its a complete or just pads take it easy on them for a few hundred THEN bed the pads in, and ive never had any rotor warping before 70k even stock acura rotors

I warped my Brembo BBK on one of my previous cars in less than 12k miles going out and doing the beding in right away. Got new rotors and heatcycled them for a few hundred and to the day i got rid of the car the rotors wernt warped

O'rly?

Heat Cycling ???

FWIW, I just got a new brake job last Saturday. New AutoZone Duralast Ceramic pads (in the front) and the AutoZone Duralast Semi-Metallics (in the back); don't ask me why I have ceramics in the front and semi-metallics in the back...they only make them that way...

Nevertheless, the car had 89,000 miles on it and was on the original brakes and rotors. 99% city driving of 1-3 mile trips...so imagine how much the brakes were used. Pads still had some left and could've gone another 5K. (Will post pics)

The indy mechanic went ahead and installed new pads, and turned the rotors. ($200 total) When I left...I just took it up to 35MPH...and applied the brakes gently several times on the way home. The following day, I took it through SF Chinatown, as well as Mission St., so I got PLENTY of stops from 30-40MPH...all gently. I didn't get the engineer's e-mail until Monday so it was a bit too late.

A few 35 to 5 or so wont hurt, thats not really bedding in, Like you said its cleaning the pad. Bedding is. repeated 50-80 stopswith out cycling the rotors will warp them sooner

No, just dont do it right away. EVEN the manual tells you to take it easy on the new brakes for a few hundred miles. After that THEN bed them in!

Exactly...meaning don't take it up to 80MPH and immediately do a firm stop...

Hard bedding ruined my Rotora slotted. Day I changed them I took it up on the mountain and did a hard brake coming down, drove for a bit to cool, then repeated 3 times.

Now I get massive vibration 15k later. Damnit

If you feel that the braking isnt adiquit you can try bedding them in, but it really isnt needed for normal drivers
