Brake/rotor replacement
I am new here, but have searched through previous posts looking for some thoughts on good new brake/rotor combinations. Dealer quoted me $1000 to do front and rear, so I am looking to do them myself and save some $$$ (~$400).
If possible, does anyone know how complicated, or if there are any tricks to replacing them (Helms manual instructions???). I do have a little shimmy in the car when braking fast, so that is a pretty good indicator it is time to do them.
I am a relaxed driver, and am soft on the brakes, so I am looking for some recommendations on parts as well. It looks like Rotora rotors and green stuff pads might be the way to go, but that is still up in the air.
BTW, this is an awesome site, and appreciate any help. Oh yeah, at 91000 on my 2000 TL, the tranny is getting replaced for free....it goes in tomorrow under warranty, but is there any hidden costs I should be looking for???
Thanks

get some brembo blanks from tire rack, and some name brand brake pads form a local shop. Should come out to a little over 500 for rotos and pads and like 150 for install. Thats how much it is out here.

They quoted you $1,000 USD??? Holy cow! It doesn't even cost that much in Canadian dollars!! That's way too much!
I just installed Rotora slotted + EBC Greenstuff pads a few days ago. Although a few days isn't really much of an indicator, I am enjoying them quite a bit! I haven't heard a single sound from 'em and I do notice a difference in braking ability. Once it is all bedded and on the car for a while, I should notice an even bigger improvement! My only dilemma was between EBC pads and Hawk pads....the decision to get Rotora slotted was pretty easy for me. Some people here have used iRotors....Beware though: some people are very happy with them, and others haven't been quite as pleased.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, going online is the best way to go for parts and I thought the brakes were a tad costly.
What about installation? Is this a do it myself job with the right tools, or would it be worth the $100-150 to have a non-dealer shop do it. I am just wondering, and I will probably go price out what the heck cost so much.

I would have to agree with the Rotora's, i have them on my car and they are great, slotted, and i am using metal master brake pads , i think that combo is one of the best, works great with no worries or complaints.
I did the install myself, one of the easiest brake jobs i ever done, it is really simple on this car.
here is a great place to get the rotora rotors from, all four will cost you 302 dollars with free shipping!

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Now, I guess I have to buy a Helms manual to get the procedure down. Any thoughts on getting the pads someplace inexpensive?

Slotted Rotora/EBC greenstuff pads. It's a #1 mod anyone with a TL should do.
I paid about 300 with shipping for the rotors, and like 140-150 for the pads.
plus additional cost like an impact screwdriver and other crap.
Go For It! You will love and respect the braking, in wet weather or during emergency braking.

I got iRotors (front and rear), ss brake lines, and axxis metal master pads for $409 shipped, $150 for install ..$569 total. They look great and stop even better... definitely the way to go.

yes good combo, but unless you dont care for brake dust, I wouldnt chose Axxis Metal pads.
Assuming that your rotor screws are not rusted, its an easy fix to do it yourself, so you can safe money like that.

Has anyone tried rotora slotted + OEM Acura pads? I have the rotora slotted + Axxis deluxe plus organic and they make way too much noise for my tastes. I would think the OEM pads would be quieter, yes?
