brake performance

On dry ground can you guys get your ABS to kick in?

From 60mph I stood on my brakes and they didn't lock up. I did however leave rubber on the ground and the car seemed to stop quickly. They didn't lock up, nor didn't the ABS kick in. The pedal was right to the floor.

New rotors/pads have 1k and should be broken in.

Good or bad?

wow...you should be dead, lol just kidding

I would kinda be worried if your ABS didnt take over. It may be damaged.

It's amazing, you didn't even get close to answering the question.

^ if it kicked in, he would have felt/heard it.

I'm going to say bad. Do you still hear the ABS check sound at startup? and ABS light?

Long lines, but the tires didn't lock up.

No ABS lights, no lights at all.

Could the tires just be that sticky? They seem stickier than the Mich energy tires I had before.

what? u put down lines but the tires did lock up? how is that possible. if the tires werent lock then they would be still rolling in which case it wouldnt put down lines. u sure u didnt engage the e-brake by accident? maybe the rears locked up in stead or something. would u still feel and hear it if it locked the rear up?

I know the front didn't lock up, maybe the rear, the front did dive.

I've locked up tires before and there was no noise to allude to a lock up.

Everything about the car is otherwise perfect. Just did my first tough stop after breaking in the brakes and the ABS didn't kick in.

Dude if you left lines then you had to have locked up. There is not really any other logical scenario for you leaving lines without locking up.

yeah rob- if it left solid lines, especially of any length (more than a foot) - abs was not active
Its not really that loud and pulsing as some would think

microsecond time lockups with a brake release and micro lockup and release is how the ABS works.
Cycling the caliper on and off rapidly to keep the wheel from sliding

If you have removed the brake lines-opened a line fully to replace calipers or the like-- where a lot of fluid dripped out,
THEN (from a gen3 shop manual but applies to gen2)

You need to do 2, 45 mph stops to stop with ABS active-
If the 2nd stop has a firmer pedal- there was air trapped in the abs controller.
That wont show up in normal bleeding procedure- have to do the abs stop in order to dislodge the clot--- it should end up in the LF caliper
rebleed all around to be certain, but my car it was just a bubble in the LF

Dry road conditions are a tough test-
throw some water in a 50 foot line down the street, in direction of travel (not across the road, with it) and test again-

When it hits the water on 1 side there should be some fast action of the brakes to keep the wheels all turning the same speed

You cant lock the rears- its all on the ABS system

My pedal didn't pulse, vibrate nor was there the noise of the ABS pulsing. I've kicked it in many times, mines loud. I also know my tires kept turning. There was no lock up, no smoke and no smell of burnt rubber. I could however smell my brakes.

Tom, I think you might be onto something here. Ever since I pushed the calipers back in, the system hasn't felt, shall we say 'as strong'. From what I gather I might have pushed air into the system. Do I have this correct?

Should I have the system bled or do the ABS first?

I'll try to do the water test. It's going to be interesting trying to get 5gal of water somewhere to do this.

PS - to married guys, don't do this with your wife. Mine told me she almost threw up. I gave no warming... hehe

^^^^^ Agree. Try the same hard braking test in the wet. If in the wet, the brake pedel still doesn't kick back like crazy, then the ABS is faulty.

use a few gallon jugs of water to make it easy

rob- Do the 2 stops thru water first- the ABS pump has to be active to dislodge its air bubble
It will not come out with normal bleeding-- I tried
Only came loose when the wife did a panic stop! then the brake felt funny...that was the bubble in the caliper now!

You have to get the ABS fully active to clear the pump and then bleed like normal

does your traction control kick in when u floor it from a stop? IIRC the abs pump is responsible for that as well...

Seems to me he suggested a possible answer that your ABS is malfunctioning
