The answer to your question depends on a few things.
But you do not need to replace the rear brake pads at the same time you replace the front. It depends also on how much life the pad has. It depends on how you drive the car like hard or easy on brakes. For example I just got rear brake pads replaced at the dealership 2 weeks ago. on my 2000 TL. I am the original owner purchased it 12/28/99. I had about 30,000 miles on the car & I am an average driver. I just made it in before I did damage to the rear rotors. The original front rotors & pads were replaced at 15,000 under warranty do to warpage problem common on some TL cars. So no you don't need to change the front & rear at the same time. But the most important thing to do is have a brake inspection.

No, you don't need to change the rears at the same time as the front in general. A majority of the braking is done on the front brakes and rotors. You will almost always burn through the fronts faster than the rears.

Th exception would be if you put front pads on that are drastically different from a friction standpoint. If so, you may want to do both front and rear to keep even balanced braking.
