Brake Pad Replacement - Toronto

New to Toronto.

Acura Dealer charges $400 to replace all 4 brake pads. (pads + service).
Is this a standard deal or overpriced?

Any recommendations for legit garages around toronto, markham or scarbo.

Thanks a lot.

if you have a jack, you can take off the rim, if you have some sockets and wrenches, you can undo the caliper, 2 bolts, pads slide out, slide in new pads. Now, you will have to resurface the rotors, about $10 each, not sure in canada. Flush the system with a friend, done.

If thats $400 canada, not bad.

Pads front and rear about $100
Resurface rotors, about $40-50
Brake fluid and cleaner $10
Buying your buddy lunch for helping $10
Satisfaction that you did it yourself - priceless

So, for about $175 US, what $200 Canada tops, and your time, you can do it yourself if you have some tools and knowledge. If you don't want to jack with it, and thats $400 Canada $, then i guess thats ok, $100 a wheel.

Yeah,.. do it yourself. It's easy, cheaper and gives you a sense of accomplishment. Do a search and you'll find plenty of instructions on the procedure. And personally, I don't think you need to turn the rotors as long as there aren't any significant groves in it. It all depends on who you ask, but I think it's unnessisary if it's good to start with.

If you need instructions and you can't find them by using the search, just send me a message and I'll give you a step-by-step.

Hey fish!!! you're here, good to see you made it to ontario brother, how was the trip?

I'm not sure where you are located, but I got an amazing mechanic here richmond hill, about 15-20 min from down town. If you would like I can hook you up with him, but depending on where you arein toronto there might be another member with a mechnic closer.

If you want to get the brake pads done this weekend, pick them up and I'll install them for you. It'll take literally 20-30 min longer than putting the car on jack stands, so maybe an hour tops, for all four.

I resurfaced my front rotors three weeks ago, then drove on them for a week, assuming the rears had to be done I took the rotors back to my mechanic and he told me the rotors were shot...We decided it wouldbe best to install new rotors, so now after having my car in the shop three time this past three weeks, I now could remove the rotors blindfolded..

SIDE NOTE: FSTTYMES1/ Kris, I was able to find a method to remove the phillips rotor screws without stripping them or having to buy a manual impact driver. I couldn't believe it myself, but my mechanic taught me how to do it with a hammer and a metal punch. I was literally in tears laughing at how easy he took it off without the proper tools, he had the impact driver but wanted to show me how to do it if I didn't have the driver. I actually filmed him doing it so I could post it somewhere, however the file format is in "nokia video format" so I've got to find a conversion program prior to posting.

by the way our stock pads are ceramic and cost a dealer 70 for the front and 50 for the rear.. don't expect to get them cheaper than that... I was buddy-buddy with the dealer and I told him to forget the rear rotors too expensive (even at their cost), I'll do them later on.

A hammer and a metal punch!! no joke, it worked perfectly, didn't harm the screw and literally works just as quick as the impact driver..

just hit the punch straight on to put a small indent in the screw off to one side. Then, turn the punch on an angle and hit it with the hammer, to unscrew the screw. When my mechanic origionally told me a hammer and a punch I thought he was going to smash the screw, and break it away. However with three light taps on the metal puch he was able to loosen the screw enought to remove it with his finger.

I'll convert the video today and try to post it. Got to love tricks of the trade....

Meant to say rear pads not rear rotors. I'm currently running four brand new rotors with new pads up front and old pads in the rears.

No it's not a ripoff.. (remember Americans, we are in Canada). Over two years ago I got my old 99TL.. it needed brakes... I wanted to learn how to do it myself, so I bought all the parts for the brake job ; four rotors and four pads for our Acura TL. The cost of the parts at ACURA was between 650 and 700, so he charged you 150 for the install, that's not too bad, but not great.. you didn't get ripped off...

sam overreacts to everyt hread ".. take his opinions with a grain of salt.

Ask the question on www.torontoaccords.com you'll get plenty of good answers.

Off hand I can think of speedtech auto

If I was to order rotors now I wouldn't go to Acura, they charge too much. I'd get the rotors sold on here.. Rotoras.. they are 160 and 140 for the front and back, then add the cost of pads.. you can get everything for under 400USD shipped (right now that's only 460CAD)..

but should a, could a, would a... bottom line you didn't get ripped off.. you could have found a better deal but what's done is done.

I need to get my brakes done at 108,000km. From what I gather, it'll cost around C$800, taxes in for OEM rotors + pads at a dealership. If my car wasn't a business expense, I would do it myself. I might make the drive up to Woodbine and have them do it. Considering those Racingbrake rotors or Rotara being sold by our vendors ...
