Thumbs up Board Noob! 2G TL-S

Hey all just picked up a high mileage 02 TL-Type S (145k) and I found this forum after doing a google search.

The car is awesome(all 3 days I've had it!) but, as usual, it has tranny issues. When its cold it will not shift smoothly. After a little warmup period it seems to shift fine.

I've worked on cars all my life, I build roadrace bikes(and race them) so Im pretty mechanically inclined. I've already repaired one of the HID headlights, located a problem with the cruise control, and replaced the lenses on my fog lights with acrylic sheet(all thanks to this forum!).

Not sure yet how far I'll go with mods but I like the look of the lowered TL's I've seen on here, I may upgrade the stereo, wheels, etc. I also like the look of the ground effects kits I've seen too. I've got my Sea Foam out in the garage ready to pour in and probably do the intake/throttle body spacer.

While Im new to this forum, Im not new to the whole forum concept - Im a 3500 post veteran at a couple online forums so Im looking forward to making new friends here and sharing/learning all about this car!

Jeff

Welcome to the site, be sure to post some pics.

You should do the tranny 3X3 drain and fill. Search around and you will find some important threads on the tranny, and fluid changes.

Welcome!

Don't worry about the trans shifting rough when cold. All three transmissions I've had have all done that, even when brand spanking new.

Welcome to AZine. It is absolutely normal when it is cold. Give it 2 or 3mins and it will be okay, or ease on the pedal when it first shifts from 1 to 2.

The car is pearl white and it's currently bone stock. Thats why I haven't posted any pics(of the car that is).

I did the sea foam treatment last night to the fuel tank and through the brake booster hose. They just did an oil change before I picked up the car so I'll wait to treat the crankcase just before the next oil change.

I was reading through the tranny fluid change threads and have come to the conclusion that I need to drain the 3 quarts and top off with 3 new, then do it again 2 more times?

I also saw where you can register with an acura online site for recalls and such? Can someone provide that link? They also noted you can store your radio code - is there a way you can retrieve that code? I don't know what it is.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Hey LeeDan your car looks badass! What lowering springs/shocks did you use and where did you get the body kit?

Well the carrier bearing in my trans(drivers side) went out. Tranny is junk. $3000.00 to replace with Acura rebuilt unit. At least it comes with a 3 year/36k mile warranty.

I've contacted Acura Client Services to see if they'll provide any help but it's not looking good.

Talk to the Service Manager at the dealer, NOT the service writer or adjuster. Speak with the manager, be calm, inform them you are well aware of the trans problem and politely see if they can work some sort of deal out with you.

I've talked to them when my tranny went out.

Client services told me I was out of warranty a long time ago.
I was at 111000 miles. Not too far IMO.

I didn't care about how much the cost of repair was but the problem could've been prevented if my local Acura would've looked over the problem 2 months earlier when I brought the car in for transmission check up.

They offered me a 75% financial aid since they said my case was "special". Which dropped my bill from $3,300 to $880.

I towed my car back to my house and Client services called a few days later.

I told them how much of a piece of shit service they had at my local Acura and told them I would never buy an Acura again.

They offered to courtesy repair it but I'm already doing the 6-speed swap.

Just be aggressive. Hope everything works out well for you.

LOL. Kris is telling you to be calm, I'm telling you to be aggressive. Every case is different so go with your gut feeling. Wish you well.
