Best Oil For TL ?
#42
I've changed the oil in one of my "girl" friends TL. I strongly suggest jacking the passenger's side front up or puttng the car on ramp, the car is pretty low to the ground.
Basically what the other dude said. I suggest everyone try it , you'll fell good!

Am I wasting money?
This may sound kind of money wasting but I use Mobil 1 fully synthetic and Mobil 1 filter. I change it myself but I do so every 3000 miles just to make sure the engine is always running through good oil. My vin # is of 007xxx purchased end of march 2001 and has had no major probs except hella squeaks that most were fixed.(except squeak in the back somewhere can't i cannot locate) Anyway, back to the point, should I wait longer to change my oil? If so, what's a safe point? 5k? 6k? Anywhere beyond that?

NEVER EVER USE FRAM PRODUCTS, they are cheap and not worth the damage to your car.
K&N filters let in 200% more dirt.
PUREone filters are efficient at removing dirt, but are too restrictive, since the pleats in the filter are too close together.
I use Amsoil 5w-30 and the Amsoil superduty filter.
It's rated higher than redline and costs less.
You can safely run the car without a major oil change for about 15-20,000 miles/year.
So change it every year if you don't drive much, or if you are like me and drive your auto hard, then change it frequently/10-15,000 miles.
Change the filters often though, about every 3-6 months, depending on conditions.
I love my car.
4.60 for a quart of amsoil and 7-10 bucks a filter.

a major oil change would be fluids and filter.
---
not really, since the oil's job is to lubricate the engine and suspend particles of dirt and metal, so that they would not interfere with operation.
there is no oil that would digest dirt that was brought in by the intake (but synthetics do a good job or neutralizing the acids produced by combustion). It is the filter's responsibility to remove contaminants and purify the oil that is passed through it.
i don't mean to sound rude, i just don't understand your question.
----------
before you ask, the pages i am referencing are not my own, but i have done my own test (bought many kinds of filters and used them on my car, then cut them open to compare).
fram filters are not like they used to be.
Fram filters

pure one
amsoil
most import (i.e. audi, vw, porsche, etc...) oil pumps run higher flow rates and can cause Frams to collapse, which blocks oil flow and makes engine go boom
i've had a couple fail on me and let pieces of filter and assorted nastiness float around in my engine.
never again
---------
Pure one filter
pure one filters are damn effective at filtration, but they give no indication of how well it flows. it might have more filter media inside, which promotes good filtering, but it will restrict flow too much to be useful.
more than you've ever wanted to know about oil

If the filter needs to be changed, then doesn't that say something about the oil that is being filtered through it?

let me just say this, I LOVE THE PLACEMENT OF THE OIL FILTER.
It's such a breeze to access and remove.
Never work fast, it is guaranteed you'll make a mistake.
you will lose a tiny amount of oil when just changing filters.
what you do is:
1. remove the old filter,
2. let the oil drain/drip from the exposed oil filter thread, then clean the gasket sealing area witha rag to remove dirt (that prevents any bad voodoo ).
3. get the new filter and fill it with new oil until it cannot absorb anymore, to prevent a dry start.
4. coat the gasket with a small amount of new oil.
5. hand tighten.
by saturating the filter with oil beforehand, you have less of a chance of dry starting.
i usually put in 4 quarts in the top and fill the filter, which by checking the dipstick, makes sure you don't over fill.
start the car for a min, check for leaks, turn off.
wait 5 mins, check the dipstick.
BAM! that's it.
