I'm trying to connect my bel 980 directly to the fuse box.

Does anyone know which wire is the hot wire - the solid black or the black with a white stripe?

The black with the white stripe is the hot wire. Solid black is usually always the negative.

thats easy its the wire with thr fuse on it. you did yse a fuse dident you? if not then i hope for your sake you dont ever have a short in your unit. you could be seeing a lot of smoke. always use a fuse for a radar detector a 3 amp should be fine
