Bad Odor from turning off A/C

Hey Guys, I'm pretty sure this had been dicussed before... if you guys have any good idea, please let me know.

I only have the 03 S for 4 months, lately the car had a very bad odor from the air vent as soon as I turned A/C off... it will go away if I turn the A/C back on.

I used to buy some expensive Japanese made A/C bateria spray thing to eliminate that smell, but boy it's expensive and I can't get those locally. Anybody have a good remedy to that? I heard people spraying lysol at the air vent (the one's at the bottom of the windshield, under the hood)...

Would anybody please let me know if that works.??

thanks.

I think it has something to do with the condensation after the AC's been on for a while. If the AC is moist, you may get mold or other funky stuff growing in it. I think that's what the smell is, could be wrong tho.

u can change the a/c filter by yourself. it's not that hard but just a matter of time as i believe u need to take the glove box off. if i remember it right, it's right behind it. or u can have your dealer to change it for u. i actually had my dealer did it on the 30000 miles maintenance service. i guess it would be around $60 for just doing that.

Go-TypeS is right .... you prob. have mold or something growing on your a/c filter ......... this is a common problem from what I've been seeing on the various boards

Changing Micron Air filter will NOT solve the problem. The mold is growing in some other part of the A/C system, not the filters, i have changed out my filter twice and there is no sign of mold growing there (I wrote a DIY post on filter change, u can search for it). I know there is chemicals u can buy to kill the mold...but i haven't seen them in stores. Acura charges you about $100 to clean the mold out. I just get a bottle of lysol and spray it in the air ducts at the base of the windshild while running the A/ C in fresh air mode. This is affective for about 2-3 months, and then u have to do it again. The problem is how honda designs their A/C system. It seems that the Evaporator Valve is not big enough or clogged that the water/moisture is not getting out.

The only thing that will prevent mold from growing is if u turn ur A/C on and always use fresh air instead of recycled air.

I also helps reduce mold buildup by turning off your A/C and just running the fan a few minutes before you turn off the climate control system.
