Automatic downshifting in SportShift

Out of curiosity, How does the Sportshift automatically downshift for you? I read that "The transmission will stay in the selected gear until the vehicle approaches a complete stop and then will shift into first automatically.", but my friend's '99 TL (say he's in 4th and braking) shifts to 2 and then 1 I believe, something like that, just not directly to 1 at the complete stop as Acura stated. I'm not sure about my 2000 and I will try it asap once i get it back from the shop. How does your TL automatically downshift in SS mode (need some insights from all TLs from 99 to 03 type s). Thanks!

Only time I've noticed it downshift is when I make a complete stop. It'll automatically go down to 1st gear. I suppose if you're in fourth (or whatever upper gear) and coast down below 20mph (for instance) ... it'll probably downshift on its own to 3rd or something...

mine does this, but mine also "upshifts" from 1st to 2nd on its own while in "sportshift" mode.

for my car, in sportshift mode, once the car is below 60km/h, it will shift to 4th from 5th, if going below 32km/h, it will shift to 3rd from 4th, if below 15km/h, it will go from 3rd to 1st, skipping 2nd. I have a 02 TL-S. It will also shifts down automatically in sport shift mode if the car feels that it needs more power when going uphill.

If I remember correctly, the SS is suppose to shift 1 to 2 automatically then you control everything from there (2-3-4-5). When downshifting, it does at a stop for me. The SS won't register a "1" or "2" in the display until I've gone like below 10 or 8 mph. I don't know if you notice this but let's say you're in 5th and want to go to 3rd using the SS, it takes a second or two for the actual downshift gear change to show on the display. So you're gonna be idle for a second or two before you're in third.

The TRUTH:
In SS mode, it does not downshift for more power, you are in total control of that
EXCEPT
It drops into 1st in SS below 9 mph and autoshifts 1-2 in case you forgot your in SS mode coming off the freeway into a parking lot.
Use of SS select and gear change should be instant not a few seconds
If delayed shifting- you need to get to the dealer while trans is still under warranty!!!

hmm...but my car does downshifts automatically from 5th -4th automatically in ss mode if my speed drops below 60km/h. Is it because I have a new tranny? (got my car in 2005)

I think if i remember correctly that if your in 5th gear and coast just a little below 40 mph probably around 35 it will automatically downshift because the amount of rpm's isnt enough so i guess it would stall or something but since we have the computer we dont have to worry about that. Also if im in 4th gear using ss it downshifts when i get to a certain speed below xx mph and also shows on the little screen.

Your car will AUTOMATICALLY down shift to the next lower gear if you slow to a speed thats to low for that gear to be able to sustain movement. If it didnt your car would stall out just like in a manual. Its there as a precaution. ALL the TLs do it.

that's what I thought too, it must shift down to prevent stalling. I think that delay is normal, afterall, it's an automatic right...

I cant even justify an answer to that
If you know that little about our cars transmissions- go do some reading

Thats as bad as the guy who thought he should let off the gas on upshift

In SS, it will downshift as you slow down.

It will also downshift if the selected gear is too high to maintain speed. For instance, if you're going a steep uphill at 45 mph in 5th gear, it may downshift 4th for you.

It will also downshift per the Grade Logic feature if you're going downhill and get on the brakes, but this is only in fully automatic mode. SportShift overrides Grade Logic.
