Auto dimming rear view mirror with compass

Well a couple of days ago my rear view mirror went tits up (famous bubble and leak). I thought about just buying a new one since the free replacement offer isn't happening anymore, but then I remembered about the mirror (GNTX-177) I bought last year on ebay. I was going to try and mod it to fit, but I never got time to do it, plus my mirror was fine.

Well low and behold, mirror goes tits up and the idea came to mind to do it and try and save money, plus have a nice compass in the car to boot. It wasn't easy, but I was determined to mod it. So out came the dremel and cutting into the new mirror to remove the bracket. Then cut the hell out of the old mirror for the backing and use it as a donor for the bracket since Acura decided to go with a non-standard mount (fuckers!!). Some soldering, drilling, more dremeling, screwing, painting and bingo...I have a compass with a new dimming mirror!!

From the outside or inside you can hardly tell its been modded to fit unless you look for it.

Here is the new mirror with the bracket cut out and the back of the old mirror for the donor

Wiring and donor attachment completed

Installed and compass calibrated. The compass module was velcroed next to the mount.

All done and now its time to clean up all the plastic chunks on the carpet and call it a day!!!

Dude, I have to finish my led mod for the instrument cluster first. Plus this is not easy either.
There is a lot of dremeling to do, and some wiring, but if you are carefull and able to pick up the type of mirror I did, you probably could do it yourself without my assistance. Look at the pics, you can see what I had to do to cut out what is needed, but when cutting out the plate from the TL mirror, you have tear that bitch all apart to get at it.

But if you have a perfectly good mirror, well the cost of the mirror with compass and destroying your original mirror that works fine, is not worth the money. I only did it because mine crapped out and I just happen to have a mirror in my closet.

I didnt do a DIY as I was just flying by the seat of my pants, I didnt know if it was going to turn out. I was ready to go out and buy a new mirror.

I'll help out anyone who wants info on how I did it, but no DIY. Already 1 year late on my other DIY.

Well if you are too lazy to replace it, you'll regret it when it starts to leak onto your plastic console and stains it, or even worse.

I think it cost me about 70 bucks with shipping from Ebay. Just do a search for GNTX-177 you'll find them. Its cool as even the compass has a auto dimmer for night time so its not as bright as day.

I don't think I would have went through all this trouble for a compass, but good job nonetheless.

Thats what modding is all about. Going through troubles to get a result that no one has on their car. I mean what would of happened if I didnt apply my modding to the led cluster (and yes the DIY is coming, on top of the MC speech I have to prepare for my neices wedding)?

I only did this mod because the damn dredded bubble in the first place. Why spend a few hundred for a mirror when I have a perfectly good one sitting in my closet?
