Yes. I use Homelink to turn on my front porch light and living room lights from my parking space. (I have no garage.) Works great.

I use the homelink in my car to turn on and off the lights around my house using X10.

X10 sucks. If your neighbor has it, you could control each others lights. Of course you can just buy more parts & pieces to try to block the signal, but then half of your own stuff won't work. I use a system called Radio RA by Lutron, who invented the dimmer. It's completely wireless by using radio frequency. Sure it was more expensive, but I have no headaches or worries about crosstalk with my neighbor. Besides, I can dim the lights on top of just on/off. Cool!

If your neighbor does have it, just change the channel yours is working on. Problem fixed.

X10

They only control each other when the housecodes are the same. Furthermore, those little tiny pulses would have to successfully traverse the neighborhood, which is kinda' unlikely. This can be stopped by putting a choke on the line, which really should be done when you build a house nowadays anyway, if you don't just get good power protection to begin with.

Those "tiny pulses" on the power line are easily mimicked, cancelled, and/or distorted. The signal is supposed to be sent and received on the zero cross of the AC power wave. Unfortunately, the AC is rarely exactly 60 Hz, or perfectly sinusoidal. There is always noise on power lines from air conditioning and/or refrigerator compressors kicking on, elevators, computers, ceiling fans, etc. X10 technology, at it's best, can only be 90% reliable. The only benefit to X10 technology is that it's cheap. My electrician tried to sell me that crap but I didn't think it was worth it. For example, I'm in the market for a grill, and I could buy a decent Sunbeam or Charbroil for $300. However the Weber for $500 is a much better deal. With light controls, like grills, you get what you pay for....
