they do well,
it helps to keep up on the atf fluid changes and replace the external spin on filter
clean the solenoids etc
Its covered in various threads on here
Avoid max rpm downshifts into 3rd and 2nd- its still a weak point as far as enough cooling lubrication flow to that area goes = its not a race car, you can have fun with it but be reasonable
The newer fluid- Honda DW-1 is semi synthetic and the new specified fluid for several decades of Honda trans
For now, you can drain 3 ounces - or take 3 ounces from the draining you are going to start doing to fully change all the fluid = it takes a few/several 3 qt drain and refill- short drive- drain yadayada- times to get it all out
Manual drain and fill is the procedure- same as an engine oil change- the drain is even next to engine oil drain! one says OIL and the other says ATF over the drain plug
do NOT go to a trans shop for a power flush- it will kill your trans!
back to the 3 ounces of old fluid you saved, send it to Blackstone Labs- look online for them,
20 bucks gets you a mass spectrograph test and human interpretation. That will tell you if bad things are happing in trans- clutch particulate matter being our primary concern, evidence of bearing wear the other
at worst and your trans finally gives up, there are relatively cheap options ($1000-1500) to acuras 4 grand! for a replacement

the major change in the design was adding oil passages to the 3rd gear clutch pack area- where little to none had existed before
And moving the recall installed `external oil sprayer to 2nd gear` (to protect the gear from heat stress and breaking at 70 mph) to inside the case

Yep, had the tranny changed under recall in May 2005 (car was at 40k miles at that time). Now have closer to 170k miles on the transmission and very smooth! Transmission fluid changes have been done every 15k miles ever since I turned over the 100k mark.

clean them (screen inside) while you are replacing the external atf oil filter
Remove battery tray for access from above
Replace them if you prefer over cleaning
and get on a program to swap out the old fluid for DW-1

I recommend going over to the 04-08 TL side and find the thread on the pressure switches. There is a whole lot more to them than you think. Once they go out of calibration they cause increased wear on the clutch packs by not engaging them at the proper intervals. This is not something you can clean unless it has a blocked passage way. There are no screens in the pressure switches. The best thing to do is replace them with new oem switches as it is very difficult to test them and see if they are operating at the correct pressure. You will notice a smoother shift and engagement if the old switches were bad.

My '00 TL has a post 2005 tranny.
Replaced at 90,000 miles by Acura under warranty. Car currently has 214,000 miles.
Replaced the fluid nearly black tranny fluid in summer '13 and there was absolutely zero shavings on the magnet on the drain plug. 124,000 miles on it and it still shifts like new.

My 02 TL-S had it's replaced with the new design at around 77,000 miles, not sure on the date. It now has 175,600 miles, so the tranny is closing in on 100,000 with no problems and on the old Honda fluid
