When you look at your engine, you'll see a silver/gray section on the top - held by 6 chrome plated screws. This is called a resonator, and it covers a common chamber on your intake.

It's a replacement for that... Pictures released show it being quite a bit taller than the stock one. Apparently there have been problems getting it to fit under the hood and still produce the claimed HP gain.

(There are actually more than 6 bolts, but they're under the plastic cover.)

I ran into Doug this weekend at Rick Case's new Honda dealership. He mentioned that the trial run of the new BILLET units have already been produced. He said I could expect to have one in hand for testing VERY shortly.

Some more informatiion:

The switch from a cast piece to billet was made for several reasons, namely quality. Apparently some "what if" testing Doug did showed that if the hood were to hit the top of the unit hard enough (for whatever reason), the casting could possibly crack causing your motor to ingest pieces of it. Not good. The billet unit is, among other things, much stronger than the cast piece.

The initial parts run was done in natural color only. Anodized pieces will be available in a few colors (I don't have details on WHICH colors) shoftly after the trial run.

I'm awaiting the release of this thing as anxiously as anyone else. Rest assured as soon as I get my hands on one I'll take plenty of pics and get to the dyno for some before/after pulls.

If they need anyone else to help test the mod I'd be more than happy to volunteer.

This is a really dumb question, but can someone explain the difference between a billet piece and a cast piece? Also, is the hood really that close to hiting the RES when closing the hood? Could you just place some foam cushion on the hood right where it would touch the RES so that pieces of metal wouldn't break and be sucked up in the engine? Thanks!

I was afraid my initial post would cause some concern that the RES touches the hood. It does not. However, there's already precious little clearance to begin with so, yes, this will make it even tighter. If anything, Doug's testing shows how concerned he is about quality.

The casting process involves forcing liquid metal into molds to obtain a final product. A billet item is "carved" from one piece of material using a highly-precise (and expensive) CNC mill.

How long will this "testing" period take? Also, what will the "testing" involve?

This is exactly what I thought happen. I haven't talk to doug in a while, since he moved to Honda.

Last time I talk to him, he said that he might need to switch to billet, didn't tell me why, because he wasn't sure. Now I know.

I know he was concerned with quality, but also concern on keeping the price that he posted. I would prefer billet for higher quality and better looking, even if I had to pay a couple of more dollars.

Hopefully I will see him one of these days and talk more about this. Thanks for the info.

My best guesses:

The final "testing" period will be long enough for a few people to drive every day with them, in real-world circumstances, and report back. The next time I see him (which should be soon since my mom's CR-V should be arriving any day now) I will try to nail him down on more exact terms.

Until then, I'll report back as I get more information.

The price might change since the material was change on the production unit. The billet process is more expensive.

My guess for a final price $320.

Where have you been

I copied this from another thread.

The RES is realated to the air intake and resonance. It gives you an average of 12hp and a max of 16hp and an average of 11ft tq and max of 15ft tq on the entire RPM band for the TL-P. For the Type S it gives you an average of 18hp and a max of 21hp and an average of 16ft tq and a max of 18ft tq on the entire RPM band. All at the wheels.

The MMII will be price about $200. Is an electrical device and it will give you about the same gains of the RES (above).

PS: Not 100% acurate on the TL type S numbers, just what I remember. The TL-P numbers are acurate.

PS: Don't ask me about gains together with CAI or headers, but the numbers will probably improved, but I don't have the numbers since it hasn't been tested yet.

MMII is Mystery Mod II...I think it is still in the works, which is why not much info has been released about it yet.

I was wondering what Mystery Mod 1 is. I'm assuming if there is a MMII there is a MMI.

Bitium, so is the RES still only available for 2000 TL and up? No RES for 1999 TLs? Will Doug make RES for 1999 TL?

Until it's available for purchase it's VaporI. After it's available for purchase it's MMI till proven to be real. After reality it's RES. Hype and speculation are just that!
