I have Yakima roof racks. Was using the Powderhound 6, but just bought Spacebooster 11 to carry more stuff and not get interior/trunk dirty with boards, boots, etc. Some members may say not to clutter up a TL racks and to use an SUV instead, but not everyone has the luxury of having 2 cars . . .

Yakima/Thule are comparable. No significant difference between the 2 brands, IMHO. Good luck.

I was looking at a snowboard rack online last night, and I was wondering how they mount. I found a type where there are two holders across the roof and the snowboard/ski is secured parallel to the roof. The other type I saw had a mechanism where it holds 2 snowboards at an angle, almost vertical to the roof, near the edge.

How do these mount to the roof? Do they damage the paint?

from what i understand. the 4 bases one in each corner sit on the roof and the rods tie the two sides together. then the clips pull the feet onto the roof. no damage from what i understand.

Mine is the one with bars that are parallel to the roof. Attaches with clamp mechanisms that clip onto the frame and fit between frame and door. It rests on a soft rubber mount that is reasonably safe for paint, but I try not to leave it on for too long. I take off the racks between trips.

Here's my old ride. I used Thule. I use them for my bikes however..No damage whatsoever. Just make sure you wax the area before you put the rubber towers on. That way it doesnt leave any marks from them as well.

Actually Im selling the towers if any one is interested.

No, there's no drilling necessary. The towers are held in place by clamps that rest on rubber pads on top of the roof, close to the top of the doors.

Go with the Thule Rack; I've had both. The Yakima racks don't stay up when youre trying to put in/take out skis. They act as a guillotine. I haven't had this problem with my Thule rack.

for the guys who use the racks for snowboards, which thule rack do you have? i found this page and i'm thinking about getting the 725... http://www.thuleracks.com/thule/carr...asp?location=1

are these easy to remove? basically...if i'm parked somewhere for a long period of time will i come back to the parking lot and see a car with no ski/snowboard rack?

I have the 725. It will stay on just fine, as long as you buy the locks as well. Without locks, someone can remove the carrier in less than 3 minutes.
