amazing mpg ....surprised

So after the oil incident i decided to leave the 5.3 quarts in the pan. I decided to drive from Toronto to montreal, 5 people and full trunk, with A/C on the whole time.ITs about 500 km or 320 miles. I drove until the tank was half empty and i looked at teh odometer and it read 360km from where i started that roughly 720km on full tank or 450 miles. That really surprised me because the car has 78k miles on it and it never had its spark plugs replaced and never been seafoamed. It never even wentr for its first maintance inspection yet. i also just replaced the tranny fluid all i did was drain and refill(lol) because the fluid that came out was already bright red.we also used petro canada gas (91 octane) for teh trip.oh ye our average speed for the trip was probably 70mph.

I actually had some pretty crazy mileage last summer. It was a trip from NJ to PA. I filled the tank from a gas station nearby in NJ, and then we drove to PA and back on one tank and we got 400 miles to the tank with gas still left, with 3 people in the car and A/C on the whole time.

the only thing i do is change my oil right before i travel long distance both engine and tranny. i also check my tire pressure(i make sure its around 32psi). plus i change my engine oil every 3100miles i know thats alot of changes but im just like that after what happen to my previous car lol.

Second generation TLs can routinely get 30+ MPG on the highway.

Here's a report I made regarding my 1999 TL back in 2007:

I made two long trips in my TL and I was very surprised with the excellent highway mileage.

Trip 1 317.0 Miles, 9.38 gallons --> 33.8 MPG

Trip 2 305.7 miles, 9.29 gallons --> 32.9 MPG

And this was averaging 78 MPH with the AC on continuously in 100 deg. F temps. There was absolutely no hard acceleration in either of those trips.

I had all four tires about 2 PSI over the recommended pressure.

Here's a direct link to that thread and there are other highway MPG reports there:

I started commuting about 95 miles a day on March 2, and have been getting around 31.5 on a fairly routine basis. Not bad for a 9 1/2 year old car, eh? I've got a K&N filter in it, and this photo was with the original plugs. I may be nuts but it almost seems like I get better mileage with the AC on than with it off.

Don't drive like a maniac, and you'll be amazed what a difference it makes. Every time you step on the brakes, you're wasting fuel, by using the forward momentum which you used gasoline to attain to heat up your brake rotors. Don't goose the throttle coming off the line - imagine you have an egg between your foot and the accelerator.

Leave six, ten, fifteen car lengths in front of you on the freeway, so you can see speed changes in the traffic flow well in advance and plan ahead. Remember it's not a race. I once drove 42 miles, from the tollboth in my town to the traffic light at the bottom of the offramp at my office, without touching the brakes once, and got 32.5mpg on that tank of gas as I recall.

sharmilan- always run 91 octane- says it right on the gas door- 91 or higher
You need more air in the tires for everyday use- try 34 or 36, and loaded up with passengers and fuel they should be near max cold pressure say 40+
that will boost your mileage for sure

maitenance? the TL doesnt require anything besides air filters for 100, but its a proven good idea to seafoam-wynns-bg-honda product-gm product-
something to decarbonize the internals of the combustion system.. cleaning valves pistons rings injectors et al
a week later throw in new NGK Iridium spark plugs- gen2 your choice of regular or IX
and its like brand new again
a bottle of redline or similar fuel cleaner every 3-4 months in a half tank of gas will keep things pretty clean

in town the ac drag does drop mileage more as you are stopping and moving the car repeatedly --worst mileage in a TL- in stop and go traffic

On the freeway its windows up for aerodynamics!- and comfort
You bought the car to enjoy right?
whats .5mpg at cruise to be at 68f when its 109 outside

I never have the windows down on the freeway. The weather's been mild enough lately to be able to make a 6:30am commute without AC or vent with the windows up.

lol for a 38 year old im still suprised you havent learned life's little lessons.

Don't assume. Makes an "ASS out of U and...well just you."

i drive very slow. how slow? i race grandmas...

i drive within and well under the speed limits. I dont launch at lights and very slowly accelerate ive had my share of close-to-death experiences as well as being chased from cops.

edit: btw, have you not noticed my signature?

I drive easy off the line, let off the gas early when approaching red lights,
and in general try being smooth enough not to spill a glass of water on the dash (figurative)

With the ever rising gas prices and no city budget to cover it, the local LE cars on patrol are suddenly driving like the rest of us gas misers...
thought one was trying to get behind me as we kept side by side or him back just a little thru numerous red lights
Turns out he was just conserving fuel--for a real chase,, hopefully!

well if you keep driving like driving out of state and sht like that but no stopings, you would get a great mpg. But once you shut down the engine and start it up again in a same time, youll loose a quite mount of gas man.

You guys are doing something wrong if you cant get high 20's on the freeway. Even my 4000 pound '02 RL with a 4 speed auto gets 26 mpg on the freeway.

if I drive around town: 18mpg avg.
when I drive on the hwy I get close to 29/30 mpg.

when I mix drive I get about 21mpg.

I drove from NY to california once using the hwy system, I AVERAGED 36.5mpg It was excellent and I'm a pretty brash driver so it was 80-85mph the entire way and I have a fetish for mashing on the gas at stoplights :-( I like the way the TL somehow manages to pull me into the back of the seat like the civic does, really great

Am I? Like I said, I've gotten 25.x mpg on a pure highway trip, and never better. I feel like I'm doing everything possible short of hyper-miling...

Here's what I do/have:
- Conservative/boring driving
- Tire pressure about 33-35 PSI
- Tires recently balanced, aligned
- Seafoamed correctly
- K&N drop-in filter
- NGK Iridium IX plugs
- Use cruise control on highway

Only possible culprit for low mpg:
- I'm on 225 width tires while the rims are stock size

How grippy are they? Sporty tires with a lot of grip have a high rolling resistance

remember to spray clean the round throttle plate inside the TB assembly
oil and fuel vapors go right to it and get stuck-

dont the 4AT (miamirice)affect gas mileage? I thought the 5AT cars were the ones that got the higher hwy mpg.

Cruise at 70. Tire inflation around 36, clean air filter, and synthetic oil in crankcase you're good to go. A good alignment helps a little too.

Yep.. the 5AT has better acceleration and better highway gas mileage.

alignment is actually very important- it gets knocked out by potholes and rough roads- curb shots etc- once a year have it done,,in some places (like where I drive)

If `toe out`- tires are pointed outwards and trying to rip the car in half going down the road
`toe in` is trying to squeeze in and wears out the inner edge of tire
neither is good for fuel mileage
Toe Nuetral is where the car is going straight and no resistance from the tires

i get anywhere from 460-490 mpt of 87 octane. i dont beat on it at all, light accelerations in the city, try to keep the shifts between 2-2.5k rpm.

Actually, when gas was like $4/gal I drove for a few months absolutely tiptoeing the accelerator...i mean, feather-footing it like it was an eggshell....and I got 19.x mpg.

BUT, just to see what would happen, after one fill-up I just drove normal. Not heavy-footed, but i stepped on it as if I was not overly concerned with the gas consumption. I wasn't going crazy, just I stopped driving crazy conservative. Well, I started getting 20-21 mpg.

Most of my driving is local btw. And uh...I am not brave enough to use 87 octane...I can't imagine that would HELP my mpg's tho...

when i used to fill up on 91, i was getting 23-25mpg, and now on 87 im getting 29+, same driving habits as with the 91. i just pour seafoam in my gas and intake once in a while. synthetic oil and its all good. tire pressure plays a big part in mileage

it the same engine as in the 98-02 accords with some very minor changes. they it say that its ok u use 87 for the accords, so why not our engines? the tl-p engines not the tl-s.
i plan on keeping the tl-p, fixing the tl-s and selling it. so the tl-p will def. be around for a while and using 87

You can use 87 just fine in a base TL engine
