Advice needed on purchasing a used TL

Hey, whats up everyone.

I am looking at purchasing a 99/00 TL as my daily driver. I have an s2000 that I use when its nice out . I have seen a couple in my area with about 65-75k miles on them and the asking prices have been $13-14k. Is this a good deal? I am trying to get one for around $12k or so.

Also, is there anything I should know about the car. Mechanical problem (transmission, etc...)

All of your input is really appreciated. Take care.

HID replacement is expensive (though not sure what the lifespan is) , brake rotors warp repeatedly causing steering wheel shake, transmission habitually shifts slowly from reverse to drive. Other than that, terrfic car!

Well, I am hoping this car does not turn out to be a lemon. Fast-TL worried me a bit with all those problems.

Anyhow, I am just looking for a daily driver, so and S type wont be needed. Thanks for the tips though.

I have a 99 TL with 114k miles and counting and apart from those darn rotors that like getting warpped (spelling) the car is excellent. Remember there is no perfect car every car has its little imperfections here and there but u can't go wrong with a TL.....

I had an Accord as a daily driver. 197k and the tranny finally went. I am looking to upgrade just a bit, hence I am going for the TL.

I found a 99 TL-P with 70k and they are asking 12,900. I am going to go look at it and see what shape it is in. He told me it was perfect, but I will be the judge of that. If all goes well, I will offer somewhere around $12,000 or so.

I didn't mean to spook you! With all said, I would buy my car all over again in a heartbeat (unless I knew in advance the Type-S was coming, tehn I'd buy that instead.) I was duped into paying $2500 for a 100k AcuraCare warranty that's 10K miles from expiring, and the best thing I can say is that is will not pay for itself. I still need $1000 in repairs to have the warranty pay for itself, and the biggest repair cost so far (covered by ACuraCare) has been a stereo replacement, in which teh part cost alone is $739. Get the car, you won't regret it! Since you have the S2000, I think you're right in not paying a premium for the Type-S. the regular version will do nicely as a daily driver!

Well, I think I found it tonight. 99 TL with 75k miles. Paying $12,500 for it. No body kit, completely stock. Very minor scratches (can probably buff them or zaino them out), No dents, Leather in great shape, Very clean under the hood as well. It is that blueish/gray color, not sure what the official Acura color code is (let me know! ). Need to replace the front brake pads and I should be able to do that myself.

Well, I am pysched to get it.

Next up, and OEM body kit!

Thanks for all the tips.

WAIITTT!!! Am I too late? If not, GET a 2000,, NOT A '99. There a moderate differences worth choosing the '00 for: an extra gear in the tranny for improved acceleration, side airbags and dvd navi vs hard drive navi.

Might be too late. Anyhow, I am not getting the NAVI system and I was under the impression the tranny's in the 99 were a little better than the newer 5 gear '00 and up trannys. I read on consumer reports that there were less problems reported with the 99's. I guess it a crapshoot no matter what year I choose though!

I drove it today for a while, was very impressed with the torque/hp (I am coming from a 97 Accord LX as my daily driver) and the car has the features I need. Like I said before, when I want let it rip, I fire up my s2000 and hit 9 k through the first 4 gears and try an lose the back end on the twisties.

Although it's true that HID replacement is expensive, they are designed to last the life of the car. Whether this actually happens is to me unknown, haven't heard anybody with this complaint. As far as brake rotors warping repeatedly, that's not quite accurate. It is a somewhat common problem for some, but I have yet to encouter a problem with 70,000+ miles on my car. Go for it you won't regret. I love my TL.

Your not talking about HID bulbs are you? They do NOT last the life of the car. Mine lasted 3 years.

The guy I am getting my TL from told me that he replaced the bulbs about 7000 miles ago. He said they cost around $300 or so.

Aren't HID bulbs covered under some sort of warranty anyway? For example, most auto brands cover their bulbs/parts for 1 - 5 years. If you ever purchase a replacement, just be sure to hold on to the receipt. I never paid to replace the Halogen bulbs in my previous car.

Remember that the '00 model has a 100K transmission warranty that your '99 will not. Also the typeface for the instrument cluster was changed to be more readable and attractive for '00 to go along with the other signifiacnt changeas I mentioned above. I would hold out for a '00 TL-P to get one of the best examples of a 2nd gen TL, especially since you don't want to spend the extra dough for the Type-S, and I can understand why. I believe the 99-00 changes are significant enough to choose one over the other!

What do you think this is a Jaguar????? we don't have an "s type"... enjoy the insurance rates, no control over first gear and frequent tranny failures, there are a few reason to chooes a 99 over a Type-s, even thought a type-s has more horses out of the gate, doesn't mean it is a better buy.

I was very happy with my insurance rates. Since i have 2 cars, the TL is only $50/month and that inlcludes full coverage with collision. No tickets in 7 years (that includes many triple digit runs in my s2k )

As I said, the '99 is NOT included in the tranny recall. Have you read the notice that owners received?

I read on this site that it was extended to the 99 models as well. It may have been in that Tranny recall thread

If you take a look at the TSB 02-027 it does include all 1999 TLs:
http://www.autosafety.org/AcuraTransTSB.pdf
- TSB 02-027 Warranty Extension: 3.2TL and 3.2CL Automatic Transmission (Supersedes 02-027, dated February 24,2003)

Good luck with your "new" TL.

Great for him!
One question while we're on trannies: does everyone's seem to take a 2-5 seconds to go from reverse to drive? My '00 does. Dealer said this was normal.

I have a 99 TL and had the transmission replaced with my extended warranty at 98k miles, I'm pretty sure the transmission is covered up to 100k
