What is a realistic price to list a 99 TL with 190xxx miles, clear title, minor scratches, newer tires, no mods,
Not sure if I should try and sell it Private or Trade In?
What do you guys think I could get: Dealer VS Private?
Thanks in Advance!

A realistic price from the dealers would probably be somewhere around or under 2 grand
and for private sale it could be 3 grand or under
Truthfully you should keep the car if it is in that kind of condition but if you gonna sell it then do it now and don't wait until this October because that price will be lower then what you can get it for now

Start high at like 4,000 or something, but be willing to take best offer. People are getting there tax money back so now is the perfect time to get the biggest bang for your buck. Try and get 3500 but dont take any less than 3grand. Thats what I would do. I always make money flippin cars this time of year best time to buy is right befor christmas and then sell for a profit come tax time. I got a mint 92 lexus es 300 w/ only 85,000 miles on it for sale right now. Bought it dirt cheap with a blown tranny. Did all the work myself and will probaly make a nice profit in a week or two. What a nightmare it was tho, had to drop the whole subframe but thats another story lol... Anyway good luck to you with your sale!

I actually have a 99 TL with 181k on it. Just installed $800 Michellin Primacy tires. Does it depend on area you live in?
I noticed in the SF Bay Area they are all listed around $5k.
I would list mine for $4600 OBO

Well considering you have a similar car (year/miles) thats interesting. $4600 again doesnt seem really really high either, If the car runs smooth and considering the design of this model still looks like a newer car today I can see that seeming like a good starting point to a prospective buyer

'99 TL pricing ?
Hey TLmane03, if ya trade it......you'll be giving it away. If ya don't have any practical use for the car and want to get rid of it.......then alot depends on the overall appearance along with maintenance records.
Being a '99 and first year of the popular 2nd gen TL's will help ya. I don't know how long you've had it or what's wrong, if anything.....but if ya get a cash offer for over $3000, I'd think ya did ok !!!!

I am going to guarantee you that dealer will offer you under $1,500 for a car. Any mainstream dealer will not put your car on sale after you trade it in, it will go straight to the auction.
Sell it yourself, take the money to the dealer. Mileage is too high and your average customer will be scared of the car with 190k+ miles. Have all of the maintenance done, including the t-belt and hope that you get an informed buyer.
$3,000.00 is a fair price for your car. List it at $4,000.00 or BO, that should get people coming.

Is $3000 give or take going to help you any? I only ask because I considered selling my 99 TL and now I plan on keeping it until it becomes a money pit. I do all the maintenance work myself, and it has been a great car for the last 10.5 years i owned it.
Imo, keep it as a beater or a daily and pick up another ride (thats what I did). I didnt have any debt(other than a mortgage), and $3000 wouldn't go far with me, so i kept my car and it has been worth it. keeps the miles off my newer car, and I considered selling the 99 TL about 3 years ago. If your car has been trouble-free, and you feel confident about its mechanical condition, then its worth more than the $3000 selling price if you can keep it running for another couple years.
Good Luck

Trading in a '99 TL ......
Alot depends on the retail price of the car which you are looking to buy from the lot. Say, you're buying a new $30,000 car......well then expect a higher trade allowance to lure you into buying the new car. But, don't expect much of a discount on the retail sticker price when figuring in the trade.
On the other hand, that same new car will have a built in profit margin close to 20%....which can be the equivalent of up to a $5000 discount for a straight no trade sale. They don't have to bother with handling your old car and will give a better deal than if you trade. So, in the end .....as said before "just keep it" or if you must sell, then it's a bit of free money.

WOW thats Crazy i had the dealer offer me 2700 which is what i paid for it when i tried to trade it for a 06 RL. It needed paint and a tune up but millage was less the the 06 rl. I bought the 99 tl with 47,000 its at 56,000 now. Im just going to keep it until its too much of a headach or someone with the right price comes around
#18
Hey Es617, those RL's are rather hard to find......how much was the dealer asking for it ?
Your '99 is worth keeping with the low mileage and should be an easy sale.

What is the best way to sell your car privately? How do you market it or how do you find a buyer?
Anyone think autotrader is worthwhile or no?

You also could try to sell it on ebay, although I believe there probally would be some fees involved with that. I've never sold any cars on ebay. However I did purchase my 2000 tl off of ebay, and was overall a great buy.

A dealer around here might offer as low as $800.
They're playing the "not worth much" game, don't see such old cars on their lot, have to sell it wholesale, etc.
NADA is quoting $1,850 for average trade-in wholesale price, and the stealer might cut that in half.
Some manufacturers are kicking in a bonus for a trade-in, like a grand.

try autotrader.com. years ago I sold Toyota Highlander through autotrader (it charged $60 for listing), and last year I bought a 2001 TL from a listing of autotrader. both transactions are across state (PA and NJ) so autotrader is very popular for serious buyers.
and if you go to autotrader.com, you will see a lot of TL for sale in your area and you should know how much you should list. there is 1 grand diff between sale by private owner and car dealer.
