HI raced my friends grand am.We tried a couple of times and he always beat me by just a tiny bit.I mean his rear bumper never passed my front bumper.I felt like i was doing something wrong.What can i do to get a better start to be able to beat his car.What should i do to get a better accelertion.Oh yeah and by the way keep in mind that i have a 99 TL which is a 4 speed so what should i do.thx

What are the specs for a 2001 grand am? I thought we can beat them handily. Either you're doing something wrong or the 01 grand am is faster than I thought.

BTW, I also have a 99 TL and I have beaten a few grand am's. Don't know the model year but they must be 99+.

the grand am v6 has 3.4 liter 170hp engine
175hp for GT model...

0-60 with a solid 7.7 sec and it has a latteral grip of 0.83g!!! which is rare for an american car...

it has almost the best accleration in its own class and it's cheap so it's kinda popular...

they look faster than it is...but they can keep close even u have a gd launch

i sure you should have the edge, are you using SS, 99 TL-P (4speed are 7.2sec 0-60) try power braking to 2k...hope this helps

You should have beaten him, maybe you were launching wrong or he had mods. Those GAGT's are geared to be very fast down low, but the die after about 70. I was gonna buy one. They handled great and had great accerleration, but they are very cheaply built.

Personally, I wouldn't even waste SS on a grand am. But in your case, use SS and make sure TCS is off. When you take off, press on the gas lightly to get traction then press the gas all the way down. Get up to redline then shift to 2nd and repeat to 3rd and 4th. But you should kill him by 2nd or 3rd gear already.

The other method is power braking but I heard it's not good for the engine. This is when you hold the brake and press the gas pedal at the same time to get the rpm up to 2000 then let go of the brakes.
