You can try to clean up the solenoid screen on 99 or change tranny filter on 00+. then Do one drain and refill. If your tranny is actually taking its toll, then nothing can fix it except rebuilding it.

I have a question and I know it's not really related to your question.. but just out of curiousity.. how have you treated your transmission? Do you mash the gas all the time or are you a steady driver?

according to my tech at acura- anything over 50k is ~right on schedule~

Depending on your cars year- try acura for some goodwill- even partial cost to match what a trans shop would charge, but you get the new improved case with acuras

read last few pages of Tranny failure thread for info

what year TL were you driving?
I know some ways to get help from acura,, but if its an 00 you are pretty much past goodwill time- 7years9 months is the normal warranty for gen2 from the court case
So it never hurts to ask for help

All business especially auto repair are suffering- car repair even more during the holidays when thoughts of maitenance give way to flights and presents and parties

the dealer can match a rebuilder price of 2500 and not break a sweat
As I said before- the service writer calls you and says 4 grand for a trans, but you need to MANAGER to get some assistance

On the post 05 units there are some failures reported here anywhere from a month to a year or its fine for 100+ but its way way less than before- still the same thing happens inside- they cant fix it totally

What year is the car bro? My 99 4spd has been doing some slipping lately and apart from new atf I cleaned up the clutch pressure solenoids and it only took about an hour and it made a world of difference.

an 02- thats within or close to the 7+9 warranty and well worth a chat with the MANAGER at the dealership regarding Goodwill-
this is assuming car has clean title- not rebuilt-salvage car
those dont get trans warranty

I think failure within a month or a year means you got a defective one. Remember that rebuild process is error prone itself (2-3%). The average lifespan of the ORIGINAL transmissions was 60-90K miles (we had some abnormalities and etc, but I think this is the main range). Now with the updates, this number should be improved. So I am thinking 100K miles should be a reasonable expectancy (unless you fall into some statistical abnormalities)

then read the last few pages of Tranny Failure thread for goodwill and how to get it- some 03- the first half year approx- are covered automatically to 7years+9months, and the rest can be goodwilled if you know how to ask or the service writer and manager take care of it for you,,

tell them you will give all 10s on the surveys if they can hook you up!

what exactly did they say? details - service MANAGER says acura wont help?
We can help you you get assistance in 99% situations- unless its salvage title- even then in some cases!

if the dealer says they cant get you any help- call corp 1-800-382-2238 x5 and file a claim - ask for a manager to call you back

again-- reading the last few pages on gen2 Tranny Failure thread- the 20 page long thread- will have info on Goodwill from acura

same thing for my tranny cause it is not in the VIN range (i am only at 104K) , but try changing the filter on it, on mine the 3-2 shift was harsh, and when i changed the filter it improved that dramatically
btw: mine has already puked all it's fluid out the vent tube once, was refilled and flushed and seems to be fine for now, been about 12k since that happened

Maybe I'm just out of date, but IIRC the driving style really has little to do with the transmission failures on these cars. I bought my 02 TL in 2005. The original transmission failed and I had one of these post-2005 transmissions installed. It worked fine for a while but had already started behaving oddly when I had had enough of the car in 2007 and traded it.

Good luck!

fries and ralphie and others in same boat

Acura corp KNOWS the vin cutoff was simply for the court case and does NOT mean prob was fixed
They are really good about helping you out with most coverage by them - often just the 300 for the 3/36 or pay 500 install labor and 12/12 or some combo
Front motor mount often found broken at trans time- not a scam- way cheaper to install with trans removed

Especially if under miles and vin is only issue:
Call that 800 and ask for a case file to be opened
Corp makes the actual decision.. and not all service managers step up unless they know you or the car, or are told to by corp

Never give up up a simple legal dispute of vin's we are talking a few grand minimum and acura gives you the new case design
Things to remember when talking to corp rep- the one who calls you
You LOVE your acura- belong to acurazine-
note- ignore the minimum wage phone person who takes your initial complaint- they read from a book and have no authority

tell dealer manager willing to give all 10s to dealer on surveys upon trans job but feel they are all zeros for not offering any help at all

i changed the filter on mine and it is shifting perfectly fine for now, and i anyways i kinda want to do a 6mt swap anyways, but also being that i am in the field, I know i would NOT want the dealer to do it anyways (especially the local one) to do the work cause they like to butcher things and rather do it myself, also i know my car has ABSOLUTLY no record with any dealer except for maybe warrenty work (and maybe the first oil change at 3k), but it was bought at the local dealer though
but be awesome if they could put that money towards giving me a 6 speed tranny

its a direct remove and replace job that a few of the techs are certified to do-
shouldnt be a big deal... regardless of cars service history Goodwill should apply to out of vin= barring salvage title and oil kit already done

Its all about how persistant you are if you get denied by corp- it still has levels above that for appeal
Good PR is all acura wants--these trans and people who belong to azine are not good for their rep!--we are the tech forum that search engines bring you to for trans problems

PM me details if you want some help- after reading the tranny failure thread last few pages- skip the first 15 they cover 4-5 years~

Hey guys,

this is my first time posting on here so be gentle

I have a 2003 TL Type S and I'm on my third tranny.

Bought the car when it was 6 months old, the orignal owner couldnt afford the payments anymore, when I got to 50K miles, the tranny would slip, and slip hard, nearly giving me whip lash every time. Called up the dealer, and they made it seem like i was the probelm.

One I gave them the car i questioned them and went for a drive with the service manager, and he admited to me there is a design fall in the tranny, and this wasn't the first time he saw this happening. This was around 2007ish.

Well last summer the replacement tranny crapped out on me at 2am driving home. And was told they extended the "silent warenty" to 100K miles or 7 years. I was at 98K last summer, so I am over the 100k.

As much as I love the car, I call it my mullet, business in the front party in the back, since its fast but a four door, my last car payment is next month, I feel like selling it and staying as far away from acura as possible. Even though they paid for the tranny(s), they were dicks about it, and wouldnt give me a loaner because i didnt buy the car from them.

So the moral of the story is the dealership should cover your tranny under 100K miles, trust me on this one I've gone through 2 already, lets hope 3's a charm.

its not a silent warranty its a court case- 7 years plus 9 months or 109k miles- was 100 but extended again

If you are under 25 most states dont allow loaner cars- and dealer is not obligated to give you one,,paying customers of service dept get first dibs, known customers second and whatever is left- maybe you get a car

When all this started happening i was over 25, the dealership that i use, they're are just known to being dicks about things, i had them swap out the engine mounts, something i actually paid for and still no loaner. My father back in the day had an NSX that he didn't buy from this particular dealership and brought in it to have something fixed yet they gave him a loaner. It's the dealer, there are many horror stories about them around here.

I was curious other than it being a "design flaw" does anyone know what the exact problem is?

and I hate to change the subject but has anyone had issues with the stereo? Last year I swapped out my battery and the stereo wouldn't accept my theft code, long story short, had to bring it to this same crappy dealer they charged me 80 bucks to fix it, last month my in dash changer died on me, now two weeks ago, my radio out of now where... will ask me for the code randomly, it won't work until I put the code in a slew of times, or if i max out my tries and try again the next day, it works fine.

read the tranny failure thread for details- its low oil flow to clutchpacks causes early wearout and the recall prob was bringing oil to 2nd gear shaft via external oiler tube
