Thumbs down 2nd Gear Lock

This morning I merge onto the interstate vtec style and as I get up to speed, I start to ease off but the tranny stays in 2nd. I let off the throttle completely but it stays. I go to SS mode and try to shift up but it stays in 2nd so I go back to D5. I get off at the next exit and when I slow ( possible to first gear range?) everything is back to normal. I got back on the highway a few minutes later and I'm still good. WTF?

I don't know if this is related but generally, when I'm driving it nice (D5 and little or no vtech) there's no problem. If I get into the throttle (RPMs 4500+), it kinda slips into the next higher gear when I'm in D5 instead of a firm shift. When I say slips I don't mean the RPMs rise up during the shift. I get a firm shift in SS but usually not D5...When I'm on it should I expect a firm shift in D5 or a "gentle" one.
