2003 TL-S Trunk Opens with panel switch but not with key fobs
It's been a long time since I've posted here but I always got great comments/advice/help so I'm back again.
I have a 2003 TL-S that I've owned since new. I bought it because I needed a 4 door car to fit a car seat for my new baby girl.
My baby girl is now 18 and I just handed her the keys to it today so it's going to be her first car.
Her first car is the car that was purchased because of her. Irony? Who knows.
Problem...
Neither key fob will open the trunk.
Thank God for the driver's side trunk release switch since that opens the trunk. I explained to her that it's not a horrible thing since the trunk can be opened from the cabin switch, but it is a pain in the ass.
Glove box valet switch is set to on. Checked it twice.
Before I handed the car over to her today, I put a new battery in the key fob hoping like hell that would solve the issue. It didn't. She's an awesome daughter. No complaints. Just happy to have a car.
I'm the dad that wants to make things as best for her as I can and fix it for her if I can.
I've done a number of searches and haven't found the best way to troubleshoot this problem. Worst case, she has to use the cabin switch to open the trunk. I'd like to do better and get the key fob working.
Advice?

Do you hear a click from the trunk area when you press the button on the fob? That's where I'd start, see if the signal is even getting there. Maybe re-program the key fobs to your car? I know our manual has a section on how to program it, not sure if it says how to clear it for re-programming.

Audible sound when pressing the cabin trunk release switch and the trunk can be opened.

Do you have the shop manual on hand? If not I can grab a screenshot of the keyfob programming section. I'd try to reprogram the keyfob to your car again.

If you can tell me the page, that would be a great start. I checked the index and didn't see anything helpful. Perhaps I'm not looking at the proper search term.

A cursory look at the Helms (CL-S service manual) shows, under the 'Keyless Entry/Security Alarm System' section, there is a diagram that appears to map out an interaction of the 'Trunk Unlock' function between the 'Keyless Receiver Unit' and the 'Driver's Multiplex Control Unit'. The 'Driver's Multiplex Control Unit' then interacts with the 'Trunk Lid Latch Switch'.
My best guess is, If the key fob programming process does not do the trick, there may be an interruption, of some kind, between the 'Keyless Receiver Unit' and the 'Driver's Multiplex Control Unit' for opening the truck with the remote transmitter.

Are they the original fob cases or did you get replacements? When I bought my '01 from my cousin (orginal owner), the fobs were very worn. I bought covers that didn't quite fit right, so I had to trim some flashing.
If not, I would still take the remote apart and try the small micro switch directly.
