2002 TL w/Navi or 2001 Lexus IS300
Which one should I get? I can get either of them for around 29.5K before taxes. I should add that for the IS300, the options include the leather package and moonroof (MSRP of 34K).

I like the IS300, but for the same price it is hard to turn down the TL. It has more feature, more power, and in my opinion a little better looking. I say go with the TL and in particular I say get the Type S if you can spare the extra money.

Thanks for the response. I like the exterior look of the IS300 a bit more, but the interior of the TL looks more "classy". The IS300 seems more fun to drive, but the interior seems too cramped. TL has better acceleration and more HP, but feels more like a V6 Accord. Acckk. decisions...decsions...

I think if the choice was between an IS300 at 34K and a TL at 29.5K, I would have chosen the latter, since I'm not some rich bastard (no offense intended towards the rich bastards on this board). But with dealers trying to unload the IS300 due to slow sales, the choice is more enticing.

TL, because its bigger, has more features, better navi, more power, costs less money, etc.

It depends on what you need the car for. If it is to toss around corners, then go for the IS300. But if it is for everyday practicality, go with the TL. Also remember that the TL comes fully loaded (- navi). You can't beat that. IMO, definitely go for the TL.

Make that 5 votes. I'm pretty sure if you go to the IS300 board, they will tell you to get the IS300. So it all comes down to what you need and want in a car.
BTW, have you test drive both cars yet?

Get the IS300!!
There, one vote for the IS.
But seriously, if you are single and wants a fun to drive car. Get the IS, if you want a bit more conservative car and Nav is important to you then the TL.
They are both great cars. Just base your decision on how long you plan to keep it and what kind of driving you do. If you are going to keep it for a long time, the TL is the way to go.

But you know what we already have enough people driving TLs, so go with Edub-TL's idea, get the IS and waste your money.
Just kidding. They are both very nice. I like the exterior look of the IS. And I think the interior of the TL is one of the best in the market today especially with Navi. Decisions, decisions... Whatever you get, Good Luck!

I have a lot of fun driving my TL, and wouldn't trade it for the world right now. I also looked at the IS300, but it was too compact for my liking, plus I didn't like some of the gauges and interior appointments. To be honest, I never took it for a test drive because I ruled it out on size alone. The choice is yours and you are right, it is difficult to get an unbiased opinion here (or on the IS300 site), but if I were you - I would invest in the TL.

I finally rode in an IS the other day. The leather did impress me. And it's rather sporty. But yeah, it all comes down to what you want. Both are good sport sedans. IS is more racy, while the TL is more classy. I still love my TL, but although I was gonna get my gf a TL also, I just may buy her a IS instead.

IS300 is really plasticky inside, just rap the dash or arm rest or door panels with your knuckles and you'll see what I mean.
If you want a small sporty sedan get the real thing - a BMW 3-series.

if you go to www.is300.net or www.clublexus.com, i'm sure the answer would be is300!! but since you're here, then TL!!
seriously, i think the is300 isn't a bad car at all. i went for testdriving before and it does feel very sporty and nice. fwd and rwd makes a huge difference.
the is300 has a very sporty interior. the TL is alot more classy with the wood. and yes the is300 interior is very small compared to TL.
the exterior is everyone's call. i think it looks great.
compared to Acura i HAVE to say lexus service is really alot better. i went to service once with my aunt's gs400 and, from their attitudes to explanation, they're really nice. i've had bad experiences with acura so......
generally speaking, i would get the TL because more bang for the bucks. and we're talking about a BIG BANG!! ha ha. but the is300 is very fun, better than the 328ci i've driven before. it's all up to if you like a fun and sporty car or you want a roomy and fully equipped TL.

Plus, this is a board full of TL enthusiasts, a vote for the IS300 would be unlikely. We are open minded to other cars on here, but we're basically all here because we love out TL's.

My opinion could be considered more objective since I haven't bought a TL yet.
If you are single, want a "sportier" drive and a flashier car get an IS300 (or BMW 325)
If you want more room, more cushy features and a more subltle car go for the TL.
If I wasn't keeping my current sports car I'd rather get an IS300, 325 or 330 for the "sport"
If I wasn't married w/ children a couple of years away I'd go for the IS 300, but it's a bit cramped.
The TL is luxurious, drives sweet, has high quality and reliability, is quick, and looks good. And its cheap. For me that's a no-brainer.
So it all comes down to what you need in a car.
good luck.

- Nick, still shopping for an 02, w/ or w/out nav

I'd take the TL. IMO the IS300 is way over priced, and I don't understand why the went I6 instead of V6. Yeah sure it's RWD and it's a stick, but it ain't all that. Here's the advantages the TL has:
Cheaper (you're going to have to pile on 3 order codes just to get close to TL accomidations)
Higher value retention
Navigation
Leather Seats, Powered seats... (The IS comes with non-powered cloth, to upgrade you're going to have to lay down nearly $2k for the LS code)
Heated seats (again, gotta add an order code, $500 more for HH)
Lumbar support (Yes, even with the LS order code that gets you leather you still don't get lumbar supports)
Memory Seats
Vanity mirror lights (I know it sounds kinda trivial, but your significant other will like it)
No sunroof (unless you want order code SR for another $1k).
You get less power at the cost of more fuel, I can't believe you get less gas mileage when you're still underpowered.
Size size size size, it's just plain smaller, no leg room, no nothing room, it's cramped compared to the TL.
Basically it's going to cost you atleast $3500 more (if you get the IS at MSRP and the options at MSRP) just to get leather seats, power, sunroof, all those luxury items. If you add up the order codes and the extra cost for the destination, you pay atleast $3700 more just for a car that is similarly equipted (but no nav or all that space). Another thing that sucks is that all those new things to the 2002 like the memory seats, the tilt mirror, it's just not on the IS.... IMHO the IS should be priced around $26000 for a fully loaded (all the order codes added), not $36000.

As former owner of both TL and IS.
I vote for IS. IS's quality is heads and shoulder above that of TL. IS is more fun to drive.
Relaistically speaking, both car can now be bought at similar price. You can go to IS300.net to find out the latest pricing.
My suggestion is for you to wait for '02 IS with nav.
Here is a pro/con list for each car
IS300
Pro- better quality, hanlding is much better
Con- very small cabin, rear seat is not really useable.
TL- big, very easy to use nav.
con- poor fit and finish, gas mileage is mediocre.

if you want an enthusiast's car with the unshakable quality and reliability of Toyota built into it, although it's a tad smaller, go with the Lexus.
if you want a faster, portly, more "luxurious", roomier YET elderly styled ride, then go with the TL.
a very good thread girls just a couple of ignorant posts, unlike what i've been seeing lately. keep up the good work...
P.S. we don't need to be hearing about your raisins Sheena...

How about coming from somebody who drives both on a daily basis.
IS 300 is hella fun to drive. It's like both cars are on different aspects of driving now. My car is more bling bling and what not, while the IS is just a blast to drive around the corners for a sedan. You really see the weight difference.
It's all up to you and what you want. The TL is a bit more luxurious while the IS 300 is more sporty.

Ask yourself what are you looking for in a car. Since my father-in-law has an IS300 and I have a TL, I get to drive both. Sure the IS300 is fun to drive... hence "sportier" but the TL is a much "better" drive... hence, I'd rather drive the car more often and longer. BTW, my father-in-law is always complaining about the ride quality compared to the TL. I've also heard this from other IS owners.

If you can get the IS300 for 25k, get it.
It's a beautiful car. I like the styling more than TL. However, if you have to pay as much as 28k for it, I'd rather get a TL.
Anyway, what are the chances of you getting IS300 for 25k?
