19's Safe in NY?

I own a '02 NBP TL-S (bone stock, but that'll change), and was considering getting some nice 19's (Racing Hart C5's perhaps) but i live in Little Neck, NY and commute to NYC everyday...my question is, IS IT SAFE? There are so many goddamn potholes and irregularities in the road that I'm not sure if it's worth it to get 19's. IS there anybody here that travel to the city frequently and have big wheels? Any comments would be appreciated...

Oh BTW, I really feel for all the guys experiencing problems with the tranny...hang in there

No.
Ed
P.S. Racing Hart makes one of the "softest" metal wheels. Good luck.

19's ARE NOT SAFE IN THE CITY!!!!

Just ask Mr Hyde, he blew 2 rims already and they are 19s. You are better off getting 18s and lowering your ride to make it look bigger.

BTW, no matter how careful you drive, there will always be a pothole that you will not see.:wow:

I bent one rim twice so far, the first pothole wasnt that impressive and I was surprised I bent the rim it occured on a road in Nassau county ina construction area during the heat wave, the 2nd time though, I was in Manhattan, driving too fast, and nailed a big one. A 17 inch or 18 inch rim would have never stood up to it either. Both times the damage was only cosmetic to the outer lip of the wheel. I do have a nice strong rim though.

The way I see it is if you are goin up in size, if you get an 18inch rim and a 225/40-18 tire, you will only have 7 mm more sidewall than a 19 inch rim with a 235/35-19 tire. I doubt that 7mm will do much. As far as 17's go, the stock Type-S rims look pretty sweet, adn if you are staying the same size, I wouldnt even bother buying new rims at all. I bent a 17 icnh rim on my Accord also by hitting a huge pothole, and someone recently bent a stock Type-S rim from a post I just read although that wasnt even in NYC. I live in Nassau and commute to the Bronx everyday. I have almost 20k on the clock.

Being wary of potholes is just something you have to get used to. NYC roads do suck. Just keep an eye out, and keep those tires inflated properly. The only way to be the most safe woudl be to just stay completely stock, and who wants to do that?

thanks for all the advice...and btw Mr.Hyde, your ride is one of the reasons i wanted to get 19's in the first place...those trafficstars are so "ridiculously good looking"...guess i'll hold off on the 19's

p.s. watch zoolander everybody

I just bent my 17" stock rim in MD on a pot hole. I was turning and it blew out the side wall of the tire and did a nice job on the rim.

The way I see it is if you hit a pothole thats bad enough to bend a 19" rim, it probably would have bent a 17 or 18" rim. I would just get a good quality rim, and watch out where you drive.

Sandeep, I think you need to send me your rims and tires so I can take care of them. I promise not to drive over any potholes.

Im in Brooklyn, Ny and im currently running 19's on my AbP 03 TL-s-navi. Ive been doing so for the past 4 months. I had the car since March. Im at about 8500 miles are so now. I have not bent a rim. i have a few curb scratches but no bent rims. im actually thinking bout taking the rims off though and chroming stock wheels since i have to send my 19's back cause one of the wheels are flaking. I think that 19 are hot on the TL. Only real drawback for me is that rubbing with 4 people in the car occurs... o yeah im running 235/35/19

235/35/19 should not rub. Cut off the small plastic tab on the rear plastic bumper cover, in the wheel well.

I have 19s in Seattle where we have pretty nice roads. I've heard a lot of bad things about NYC roads and you should probably follow the advice of those in this thread.
