1999 Intermittent Driveability Problem

Unpredictable, the car starts up and seems to be dropping a cylinder or sometimes two. It can persist for a drive of five or ten miles, and then on restart, not be there and the engine performs as the day it was new. Described to Dealer, they started the car and on that day and at that time, it started and ran fine, so they turned it back to me -- Could Not Duplicate. When running rough, no codes set or other warning lights. Anyone experience anything similar?

I don't want to just start "fixing stuff" hoping it will cure the problem.

It sounds as if the dealer doesn't want to start "fixing stuff" as much as you do!

Considering that you've mentioned no CEL, how would you know it's dropping a cylinder or two? is it just rough operation based on observation?

Have you checked vacuum/air connections leading into your engine?

In addition, if you have high mileage and have never done a cleaning of the intake manifold, that may be obstructed; there are threads on here that describe how to inspect and clean that.

Sounds like a dying coil pack that's intermittent..

Start unplugging to find the culprit.
