120$ for a key?

ok so I lost my car keys and now I have to make a new one.I went to Acura dealership and they want 120+ dollars to make me a new key. 65$ for the key and 65-80 for programing. Now is that crazy or what? Programing I kind of have to do but, can I just get a blank key off e-bay for my TL and then they can cut it and program it? I have seen them for 15$US and thats alot better then 65$.

Programming?? You don't need that for our keys. Could you be referring to the keyless entry remote? It costed me $45 for a new key..

$120?!? You might try calling around to see if you can get it for less. You could even try a few reputable locksmiths. Yes our keys ARE coded. The key has a transponder chip inside it. If the car isn't programmed to recognize it, the car will not start.

yes thats exactly what they told me at the dealership, in order to even open your door without the alarm going off you have to have it programmed. Its BS. So can I get a key for a TL with a transponder chip off ebay, and will they be able to program it? it would save me about 50 dollars I think.

Hmm all I did was go the Acura dealership and get a duplicate key cut, they didn't touch my car, and I use it every day.

i dont know man, try rolling your window down, and closing and locking your door, and the alarm should be on. Now unlock the door by pulling on the little tab on the door. Alarm will go off, and you cant turn it off unless you have the remote or the PROGRAMMED key that the car will recognize. Thats what happened to me and luckily I had the key with me. Now thats the only key I have, so if I lose that one or ock it in my car I am prety much screwed so I will have to pay even more money to fix that and to make a new key. Rather be safe then sorry.

well make sure not to turn ur car on with another key because then it will lock your computer and you are screwed. The key costs anywhere $100+. The key itself is like 20 bux and they charge 1 hour labor for programming it. It literally takes them no more than 2 mins to do this.

dang i wish i could have thought to buy a key blank before i went to my dealership. they charged me 80 for the key and program. they take the code from your vin and then program the key that way. but i wish i would have seen this. it might have saved me a good few bucks. oh well too late now and at least mine has a acura symbol on it haha. you gotta look on the bright side.

The Acura keys are laser cut. (Or there is something special about the way they are cut.) I believe ONLY the dealership has the capability of properly duplicating our keys.

I know it's crazy...these key + key fob prices! I once inquired at the dealership how much it would cost me for a new key for my A4 if I ever lost it, and they said $175! I'm glad I never lost the two keys that I had! What's even more crazy...the same day I was there, a guy lost a key to his VW Beetle so he came to the dealership to get a replacement, and I asked him how much he had to pay for it, and he said $185! UNBelievable...!

Nothing special about the 2nd Gen keys. Should be able to cut at any locksmith. Just thank your lucky stars that these keys aren't like VW, Audi, or BMW keys. Getting those are usually $$$!!

Makes me think your anti-theft feature isn't working like it should. The car is supposed to read the transponder when the key is inserted and confirm that it's the correct key. That's what that green flashing light with a picture of a key is for. It lets you know that it recognizes the key.

Well what you can do is call around other Acura Dealers. I've done that and I believe I ended up paying maybe around 75 dollars or less for a new key cut and stuff.

Yes you do. What do you think the immobilizer is for. there is a chip in each key. The dealer has to program it to match your existing key or in the case you dont have it they have to get the new key to learn to the immobilizer

That must have been it then. They didnt even touch my car, but if they can do it from just having the key that makes sense. All these places you guys are talking about are hella expensive tho. Mine was $45.
