Thumbs up 103 Octane

There is a guy that I work with who sales racing fuel. He gave me 5 gal. of unleaded 103 octane. I had a 50/50 mix of 93 octane. Man it rocks. True horsepower gain. He said that 5 gal of this stuff cost about $37 bucks. I don't know if I would run it full strength though.

Wouldn't that hurt your engine more than help it? If you are messing with fuel and you want results, get a fuel pressure regulator and bump up your current pressure.I bumper mine up from 34 psi to 37 psi and i can feel it in the high RPM's.....

hmmm....higher octane shouldnt effect performance unless you're boosted or you could advance the timung along with it. Are you sure its not in your head? Intersted in any feedback.

Exactly TorqueNazi, there should be no gain for that range of octane. If you are running boost and a pretty advanced timing, then higher octane will help. But with direct injection, playing with timing is not just a wrench and a timing gun.

You can also use Toulene (sp?) to boost octane, it's a paint thinner if memory serves. This guy with a boosted Audi 5000 and way too much advanced timing, who usually detonates at high revs, mixed toulene with 92 octane for about 94 octane, and got no detonation....nice prospects

it shouldn't mess up ur car if u do it right. If u get a octane booster, which u can buy at any kragens or something, it has the ratio of how much u should put in per gallon of gasoline.

It will help you......and it will not harm your engine as long as you don't venture into the leaded gas realm of let's say 116 octane.........104 is the highest unleaded you can buy......

Sorry, but as an engineer I don't buy it.

Your engine is optimized for premium with a RON of 93. The spark maps and timing are set for that. Unless you change parameters in the combustion chamber (compression, swirl rate, etc.) you won't see any or any significant changes. In fact, you could lose power because higher octane fuel has a slower burn rate.

Here is another warning: racing fuel and aviation gas have different chemical additives than fuel designed for street use. Over time, you run a real risk of deposit buildup, valve and valve seat erosion, etc.

I think the gains are simple expectation bias, and not worth the potential downsides.

So what's wrong with psycological HP?

I mean if you THINK your car is quicker, or it FEELS faster, isn't that what is important?
