100watt High Beams

I just replaced my stock high beams with 100watt replacement super whites. I am a little concerned over the heat these bulbs put out. Is anyone out there using 100watt high beams, what has been your experience?

Thanks

Chris

Bad idea. Thats a quick way to blow the bulbs, possibley melt your headlamps, and fry your relays. Why do you need 100 watt bulbs anyway ?

Why would you use your high beams anyways since you have HIDs? Plus, 100 watt will definitely burn your housing and wires.

DON'T DO IT!

I've had 100W 9005 highbeams for about 2 years now. Never blew the bulbs...melted the housing, or fried any relays. Then again this is the first set of 100W bulbs I've installed in any car, so until they burn out, I can't really comment on reliability issues.

There is always an exception to every rule. Good luck with them.

well if you use them a lot, i would say that you would have more problems with them.

with city driving, there is less need for them, so they tend to stay idle.

I've been using 100watt bulbs ever since I got my car back in Jan. '02. I haven't had any problems at this point. I'm the type of person who likes to use high beams as often as possible (80% or so of night driving on interstate). I say it's safe to use it from my experience, but then again there might be someone on this board who had problems using them.

The fact that they are 100W, will burn out your stock wiring and blow the bulbs is true. However for this to happen you have to run them all the time like your regular lowbeams for this to happen. For most of us, our high beams are rarely used, and if used maybe for no more than 15mts max total per month. That is nothing and will not do and substantial damage to the wiring. And that is why board members have had their high beams with 100W and still going for 2 years plus.

Now for you, if you are using them often, then you will burn your stock wiring out quicker, and then it will be a real pain to deal with, because the bubls will start to blow out every week. So I would suggest you going back to 55wats or do a simple wiring modification of so you can use the higher wattage bulb without any problems.

Hope this helps.

I agree... I rarely use my high beams.

15Min per month? For me maybe even less. They're mostly used to signal other drivers.

Doesn't the relay and/or fuse break before it burns the wires? Whenever I calculated the current going through the wiring, I found out there was some room left (meaning it was still under the maximum load that is supported by relay and fuse). The way I think is this way: I think the wiring will be okay until right before the relay/fuse break. What do you guys think?

You bought high beams that are twice as bright as legal DOT approved lights so that you can "signal other drivers?"

I'm sure the other drivers on the road are very happy with you.

But that's one sure way to get their attention especially if the low setting sun is directly in their faces. However, I still have no intention to use 100W high beam bulbs.

Note that the high beams are used as daytime running lights (DRL) in some countries (Canada being one of them). In this case, a dimmed high beam acts runs all the time unless the headlights are on, and its best to use the stock bulbs for this.

Now a super-bright white headlight I could go for...
