100 miles an hour
100 miles an hour
last night i was driving back home from palm springs...
the I 10 and the CA 62 are pretty much empty at this point.
I got cruise control on at about 70 when a black pontiac firebird comes rolling behind me. (btw are those fast?)
anyhow he tailgates me then goes around and cuts me off.. this pisses the $hit out of me so switch off cruise, go into SS mode, and change lanes.
By this time the firebird has about a 2 car lead. then i just downshift, WOT and shift up to 4th. he tries to pull but he can't.. im passing him up at this point going about 130... i think his governers kicks in when i was about a car ahead, he just can't accel any faster... then in about a min he's no where to be seen.
anyhow my question is... if i'm going a 100 mph and my revs are only at about 2800 rpms.. is this putting any stress on the car? i know im going fast but the engine isn't really working that hard.. any input?
thanks

first off, v6 firebird = slow piece of $hit, v8 = say hello to his taillights
as far as the rpm's, the lower the rpms, the less stress on the engine, and better mpg. thats why we have more than 1 gear. its always better to be in the highest gear possible when cruising. only use lower gears for acceleration (i.e. passing, racing)

our car has a very tall 5th gear...doing about 3000rpm at 110mph...
it's gd...saves fuel at top end~
all GM cars has speed governor...except corvette i think...and no more than 125 i guess...

As for iliveinapathy's question, no it's not putting too much stress on your car. It probably wanted more.

Don't forget about the limited edition V8 Firehawk...345HP, 6 speed, 0-60 in 4.9 sec*.
I wouldn't get one, but I must give credit where credit is due.

I dunno guys, when I was having a lil "fun" with my friend's MP5 last night, the car didn't feel like it was working hard at all, heck, it didn't even feel like I was going at 100. But then I realized it was fast when I passed my friend 120 :P
I think he is talking about a Mazda MP3. They are fun cars I think they are supercharged. Not sure.... What gear where you in to be at 2800 rpms. You should of been in 4th. At those high speeds you not moving at 2800 rpms. If you stretch 4th you should be able to hit 145 or 150 mph. I hit 140 mph at like 5500 rpm in 4th and it was still pushing. In 4th the power only starts about about 4500 rpms.

I think he means Mazda Protege S. There is no way that he can pass it at 120 if his friend drives a M5. (Unless his friend doesn't know how to drive...)
2 of my friends have Z28 '96 and '94. both said it governs at 130 mph. They had it up that high and would not go over, so for a TL to Pass a Firebird...Very Likely even though the speedo say 150 on them
