03 type s stalled

Hello,

I just bought an 03 type S and after 3 days it stalled on me just as I left my house. At first I thought it was b/c it was cold, but the 3rd time it stalled, the temp was at least 1/4. It would start right up again, but I noticed this happened after it was idling at a stop and then tried to take off. Any ideas what this could be? It only has 52K on it and doesn't sound any different. Could this be the timing belt and if so what are some red flags I should look/listen for?

Thanks,

Welcome to acurazine

you should be fine on the timing belt for another few years-scheduled for 7/100 replacement -sooner if used in hard conditions-see owner book for details
Spark Plugs should be replaced soon for best performance and mileage,
do a seafoam treatment a week before that to clean the engine internals
see the gen2 DIY for more info

were there any warning lights on the dash?
If you go to a parts store they can check -for free- if there are any fault codes
If so- tell us what they are

was this a dealer sale or private party?

Most important -dont panic-
on here are actual acura techs and others who really know these cars and can diagnose most things for you

Do you have basic tool set- basic mechanic skills,or are you stuck with going to a shop?

sounds like the ignition switch. turn the car on and wiggle the key. if that shuts it off, there is your issue

Thanks for the quick response guys. I've got some basic mechanical skills but may have it checked on the computer this weekend just to be safe. I'm just a little scared of the timing belt issue b/c I hear that it can cause some big problems if it's not spotted in time....With that said, the check engine light flashed after the car stalled but that's pretty much all I noticed. Also, this happened at night with the lights on (don't know if that has anything to do with it or not). I'm hoping that it's a stuck sensor or something since the car was sitting a while before it was sold and I've been driving it quite a bit lately. I bought it from a private seller who had regular maintenance done to it at an Acura dealer.

I checked the ignition this morning and it was slightly loose, but the key did not come out and the car did not shut off (at all on the way to work).

There are many possible causes such as the ignition switch or a sticky IACV. Search the forum for "stall" for some ideas.

If you just want to eliminate the ignition switch as a possibility, it's about a $50 part and you can replace it yourself.

the key wont come out- if it jiggles thats probably got a lot of wear internally from having a bunch of keys on the ring

Get to a parts store today for that free code check, report back here with any codes
Take under 5 minutes

If the car sat some months, I would do a full seafoam treatment (or wynns or bg or honda stuff or gm) to remove carbon buildup and restore good spray pattern to the injectors
When gasoline sits in a tank for more than 90 days it begins to break down- at 6 months its becoming gelled--then it gets picked up and gets to other parts
you want to clean all the crud out- use some fuel injector cleaner in the tank
Use max doseage cleaner, 1 bottle to 1/2 tank of gas
That will remove many bad things and is like tune-up in a can
also clean the oil passages and change the oil&filter

then we can go back and troubleshoot if any persist

the ignition switch problems occurred on the 99's. seafoam, change the plugs, and maybe clean the egr port.

I had it put on the computer at Autozone and no codes came up. The guy suggested I put some Lucas Injector cleaner b/c there may be some condensation in the fuel system. I guess I could give it a shot unless I hear otherwise.
