02 type S vs 04 TL

2002 TL-S with NAV and 109k for $6200
2004 TL without NAV 89000 for $11000

Would it be worth it to spent an extra 5 grand to get the new gen TL?
Does the 04 TL have transmission issue like the 2nd gen TL?

Owned 2000 TL with NAV, totalled the car last week
2000 TL

$5000 for 2years newer and 20k less miles seems a bit steep in my book. It all depends if your a gen 2 loyalist or if perhaps you want the "newer" styled gen 3 model. As far as reliability issues, the '04 will still have most all of the inherent tranny problems as the older models. Basically the same guts with a facelift !

From what I've heard through my Honda mechanic at Gardena Honda, who's a total Acura fan too, the tranny in the 3rd Gen has been completely re-engineered. They are to not have the same problems from the previous gen. I'd go for the 2nd gen, although we have the tranny problem, it looks a lot more sexier IMO.

get a 05 or 06 TL. the 06 has better weight distribution though, 60:40 front/back, a new engine management system to help reduce torque steer, and a tire pressure monitoring system. So really i'd save up some extra bucks and go for a 06

To me our 2nd gens are starting to look outdated, to other people they may still look like new cars simply because the way acuras hold up over the years vs other cars, paint wise, mechanically etc….

Thats a lie, I read and was told by numerous Acura techs and employees that the 3rd gen Acuras still have the same tranny problem.

The guy is a just a fanboy oblivious to the facts.

Right, but only the 2004 3rd gens have the problem, its been corrected in 05 for all the 5speed second gens and for the 2005 3rd gen modle year

There are far less 3rd Gen tranny failure than 2nd Gen, with the 2nd Gen you leave your house and pray you dont get stuck

Personally, I like the 2nd gen TL better. I'm not just saying that because I own one. When I purchased this car, there was an 04 right next to it that I could have bought. I drove both and decided on the 03 TL-S. The 04-06 seems too BMW ish, harsh for a luxuary car. The 2nd gen was more comfortable to me.

As far as tranny issues, I'm willing to bet the 02 has a replacement tranny in there. The 04's have the same tranny issue, just not as common. Try for an 05-06. Honestly the only 3rd gen TL i'd own is a 07-08 TL-S 6spd.

the 04 05 06 all have a prob of early- sometimes verrrrrry early- trans death- and are only warrantied to 50k miles
They need a court case just like gen2
If you believe that a fix was done right away, why are there problems with the replacement transmissions too?
The fix so far as anyone can tell in 2005 for the warranty replacement units, was a change in the internal design of the case- making larger oil passage galleys,
but the issue of 2nd and 3rd gear clutches simply dont get enough oil to them, and eventually bake- remains
Add some aggressive driving to what was intended in its design to be a 4 door sports car, like a Maxima, and stuff breaks and wears out.
the TL is Not all out road beater, but fun enough to go play a bit~
Read the gen3 thread on trans failure. Its growing in size of members

dont even look at 07/08 tl's as you would want to avoid the steep depreciation rates
