$1400 to fix rear main seal

hi there:

do you guys know any shops here in N. VA that do a really good job on fixing rear main seal?
i've called around and usually they charge around $850 to $1200.
if it's only a couple hundred dollars difference, then i guess i'd prefer go to dealer instead of other shops that i don't know them well.

your feedback is much appreciated.

You should not pay more than $500 for this job. I found a transmission shop to do it for me. They remove trannies day in and day out, so it's a few hours job for them. A regular mechanic will charge you a lot more.
Just make sure they don't gouge the sleeve when removing the old seal.....no screwdrivers! I removed the front seal by using a drill to set a screw in it. Then I pulled on the screw with pliers and the seal came out.

Hey Alex, how bad is the seal leaking ? When was the last time that the PCV valve was replaced ? If it's been awhile, replace it ..... clean up any leaky oil from the bottom of the motor and then monitor for fresh leaking oil afterwards.

But, if you're leaking bad.....then always get 2 or 3 estimates to compare for the repairs.

IF its really failed = mass quantities of oil observed coming from it after removal of inspection cover- 4-6 hours MAX to remove and replace trans
add half hour to replace seal itself
trans shops are the best choice for a trans removal job
few regular shops have the experience to do it fast,, and right

BUT
if its minor
then replace the PCV for 8 bucks, when it is sluggish or wont open, the pressure in crankcase looks for next easy out
thats the rear main seal first,,as well as valve cover bolt gaskets, valve cover gaskets
This has fixed several ziner rear main leaks recently

Was the car parked for some months over winter or lots of short use?

as said above- remove cover- clean oil up, replace pcv and monitor oil loss...1200 dollars,,,what a ripoff these places are

He is a member on here that does a lot of work for us and knows just about everything there is to know about these cars.you have to find his profile and send him a message, try searching his name and it should pop up. its an expensive job because you have to remove the transmission to replace it, I Know because I just did a tranny swap and replaced it at that time.

When I talked to him I believe he has a shop/ garage where he does work himself. He can do things a heck of a lot cheaper than the dealership and probably most shops plus I cant think of anybody better to do the work.

I have this issue now... and I did leave it a while when it was cold and I do lot's of short use? What does that does that do?

I have two leaks he showed me... There's a small leak on the gasket over my oil filter.... and the rear main is leaking a little... about two drops on the paper overnight, but it's wet down there lol... no but on the bottom around the seal and it drips back when I drive a little.
