Spare tire 2006 RL
Replacing Pax tires with regular tires. I know the spare for the 2006 rl is T155/70D17. Hard item to find. The 2003 MDX spare is T155/90D16. Does anyone know if it will fit the RL. When I do the conversion it looks to be 1/4 inch shorter( I think)

You need to maintain exactly the same rolling diameter, because of the AWD, as the other tires you are running. T155/70D17 meets the rolling diameter requirement of the various tire sizes I cited earlier for 17 through 20 inch.
Also, because of the RL's large front brake caliper, there is no reason to think the MDX spare would fit on the RL, because according to others, including my dealer, none of the 2G MDX OEM or OEM accessory wheels fit on the RL. As always, the watch word is try before you buy.
PS. The RL spare wheel is a beautiful alumninum alloy wheel, no steel wheels for this application, painted a bright yellow so you cannot mistake it as a spare!

Just out of curiosity, how much are the spares going for?
Have you tried the internet, also? There are many internet salvage yard dealers.

I have the same problem, replacing PAX on my 06. I just ordered a set of Black Ice Invisio 20". I would have gotten five of them but a regular sized tire will not fit in the spare tray. I couldn't locate a spare either. Looks like I will end up purchasing one. Let me know if you find an extra one anywhere.

Do not do it.

Keep an eye on eBay. I got one for around $150 shipped. They don't pop up often but hey do. Remember, you'll need a few other things too: Lug nuts for they spare (they're different), hold down bolt for the trunk, a couple of safety stickers if you want to be "compliant," styrofoam spacer, etc.

Yes, it will clear the rear calipers. If you get a flat on the front you could always move one of the rear tires to the front and put the spare on the rear. This would, of course, require double the time to change the tire.
The MDX spare is a 165/80/17 compared to the RL's 155/70/17. There's a chance it could rub. More importantly, being nearly 2 inches larger in overall diameter, it probably won't fit in the spare well in the trunk.

One bore an inch higher than the others is a scary thought.

Just de-paxed today, and purchased a spare on eBay for $65.
Won't the nuts presently used on the wheel work for the spare when I do a roadside swap?
What's this styrofoam spacer?

The PAX wheels and the standard wheels use different kinds of lug nuts. I'm not sure what wheels you bought or what lugs they require, but the spare should really only be used with the standard lugs. If you bought standard lugs for your new wheels, you will be fine.
The styrofoam spacer goes under the trunk floor and keeps the spare from making contact with the chassis as well as keeping it from sliding around. The hold down bolt goes through the styrofoam and anchors the spare the the chassis.

I bought standard wheels, so i should be OK on that front.
So, it seems like the spacer and hold down bolt probably aren't necessary. I might just throw the spare in my trunk, and leave the current PAX-spare tire setup in there. I haven't put anything in the trunk or opened the trunk in probably 4 months, so i'm thinking i'll be ok. Thanks a ton for the info.

I would be curious to know if the standard wheel and tire fits in the spare tire well, or if it is too tall and causes the floor cover not to sit properly. Thanks

In the case of the spare, you do need different lug nuts. Standard wheels use the lug nut with the flat surface with washer style seat, whereas the donut spare use the spherical seat lug nut. The good news is that the PAX wheels use the same lug nut, so you may have 20 of them!

Got it, thanks. I had purchased a donut spare also under the belief that fullsize wheel and tire would not fit under the floor cover. I do have the spacer and hold down bolt. Makes for a clean install since you have to remove the very different styrofoam insert that comes with the PAX equipped cars, anyway.
