another PAX problem!!

So I drove to LA from SF and got a nail in my tire while I was in LA. This is my 4th NAIL since owning the car. I had to find a PAX certified dealer, Santa Monica Acura, and then wait 2 1/2 hours and pay $150.00 to have my nail plugged. These are the most ridiculous tires I have ever had. Last month I had a nail and it cost me $200, becuase the nail permeated the inner core, and that had to be replaced.

I am about to trade this car in..even if it is at a loss, cuz the tires are a major f'in headACHE.

Sorry to hear that. So far, knock on wood, I have been lucky.

If you like the car otherwise, get a new set of wheels and tires. Acura should give you a spare for free. Get the spare first, to show them you are a PAX user, then do the wheel tire change.

For the cost of a new set of PAX tires, you can get a decent set of wheels and tires with TPMS from the Tire Rack, like some of the Enkei 18x8 wheels and decent 245/45-18 tires.

Acura will not give you a spare for free. The PAX lawsuit settlement states that PAX owners will get an allowance of $110 toward the purchase of a spare package which will include a spare and related items (trunk tray, lug nuts, labels, etc) but you would still have to pay for the items. At a discount it's at least $500. At full retail, a lot more.

HERE'S a copy of the settlement.

frankly, i'm surprised that the pax owner didn't go on ebay and buy the spare set for ~$30-$60....

quick question, what's in the space where the regular RL kept their spare tire and tool set, on the pax RL? is it just hollow empty space with a screw hole? or is there a cooler/refregerator, amp, speaker, etc. in place of the spare tire?

Run the numbers -- you'll lose more dumping the car than a set of replacement wheels and tires. Whole take-off wheel sets can be found on E-Bay for as little as $700 to $850.
Original OEM Acura RL wheels can purchased $100 - $125 on E-Bay and at many local and on-line auto salvage suppliers. Add a set of tires, TPMS sensors and lug nuts and total cost would run about $900 - $1000 -- very much less than what you'll lose dumping the car. Spares can also be found in the salvage market.

This is what I did (take-offs from E-Bay) at a cost of less the $1000. I'm still alternating these wheels with the PAX set until the PAX are worn out. I too have been lucky enough not to have had a flat or slow leak.

To psheu: PAX cars have a large styrofoam tire changing tool holder filling the spare tire well. Removal of this opens the space for the Acura spare and a smaller tool holder that fits the center of the mini-spare.

I have not yet tested this, but ....

based on what my dealer told me, the settlement is to provide a Honda spare tire kit or a payment (which we know to be $110 per the settlement, and you have to get through the class action administrator) in the event that you already purchased a separate spare. I said what do I have to do to get the spare, and he said come on in and we will put it in the trunk. At no cost, just like that?, I asked, and he said yes just like that.

But you are right, that the provisions of the settlement seem to indicate that a kit will be made available for purchase, and after you purchase it, you turn in the receipt and get paid $110.

So my dealer is either being generous, or does not know what he is talking about (possibly the latter)

My guess is also the latter but if you can get the spare for free...I'd go there tomorrow!

I got the class action paperwork a month ago, but I started to fill it out and it seemed so complicated, I set it down for a bit, and never picked it up again. I will find it today. Even a spare isn't much of a help, because unless it is a full size spare, and it has a bank account to pay for the repair of the damaged tire, it is going to help much. I have 35K miles on my car, so let's see. My PAX tires are still at 6/10 so I was thinking if I had to replace the tires, I would consider changing them at that time. Maybe I can hold off until the 2010 or 2011 model is out.

Your PAX is good for 125 miles in run flat mode, the spare is intended to help you out if you drive on long trips, such as in the desert southwest, where a PAX dealer may be farther than 125 miles out...

Here are the installation instructions for the PAX Tire Kit

http://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/pubs/AI/BJA41918.pdf

Here are some Cautions from the document, the second telling you to ignore mileage countdown messages when using the spare
Cautions:
• A PAX tire/wheel assembly is very heavy (72
lbs). If you need assistance with changing a
tire, you can call Acura Roadside Assistance at
800-594-8500. This phone number is also on
a sticker at the bottom of the driver’s window.
• A TPMS message may be displayed when driving
on the spare tire. This is normal since the spare tire
has no tire pressure sensor. Additionally, a countdown
mileage message will be periodically
displayed while driving on the spare. Ignore these
messages when using the spare tire.
