2006 RL Wheels

Does anyone know what the lug pattern and standard offset is for the 2007 MDX? The MDX has a 19" Chorme Wheel upgrade that I'd like to put on my RL but I can't get any answers from the dealer on wheather the rims would fit. Thanks for any help.

RL Wheels

Thanks for the reply. I was on Ebay today and just for kicks I searched for both, the 2007 MDX and 2006 RL wheel upgrade packages and listed on both was the same bolt pattern 5 x 120, no offset info. I'm going to take the info to the dealer and have them explain if this info is accurate or not.

Just for future knowledge....the bolt pattern on the 2007 MDX is the same as the RL, 5 X 120. I'm not 100% on the offset. I'm trying to research it on acuramdx.org.

offset is 45

Ok, just got a reply for one of the ebay sellers regarding the 07 MDX 19" wheels. The offset is 45, and I do think it's possible to put those wheels on our RL!

Wheel Offset Calculator Website

Thanks for the offset info. Checkout this website: http://marksink.com/tire_wheel_offset/offset.html. I think 'neuronbob' put this in an reply to someone else, but it's pretty good info. Especially for what we're trying to do. Thanks 'neuronbob'...

Offset info

Got this off the previously noted website:

Current Wheel Width inches: 8
Current Wheel Offset: 55 mm

New Wheel Width inches: 8.5
New Wheel Offset: 45 mm

The clearance from stut housing to the inside of the wheel will be 4mm MORE
The outside edge of the wheel will EXTEND an extra 16mm

Not sure yet if this will work, but it's looking good so far.

Good info guys. The optional 19's actually look really nice. I think the offset and width is fine for the RL. Only issue we would have is if the wheels clear our front brembo brakes.

it does look like it will clear the brakes because the spokes are reallyi far out (no lip what so ever). Maybe someone can bring their car to the dealer and have the wheel tried on..

Does anyone have any idea how much these wheels weigh in comparison to stock 17 or 18 inch wheels?

Just so that we all are on the same page, are these the 19" mdx wheels you guys are refering to ? . They look hot, reminds me of the modulo concept RL wheels.

THe width for those wheels is 8.5, instead of 8.0 inches from the RL wheels. I am sure they will clear the brakes, but without trying them on, we have no idea how much they stick out..

I looked at our wheel wells and a extra 14mm outward will not cause a issue. Also I agree there is a very high chance they should clear the brakes.

Anyone's dealer has these wheels yet ?. A quick test fit would be a good idea.

I wonder if you live near a friendly dealership who would be willing to swap on the tires to see if they truly fit?

Well called up another dealer today and they told me the rims are 8.5" wide, so that's nice.

Well, let us know what happens.

I would check on the weight also. The larger the wheel, the heavier it tends to be, and the tire will also be heavier, and that may make a difference...

You should get some sort of test fit return guarantee, that is, fit the rim before mounting a tire on it. If it rubs on the brakes, you should know immediately, then return it. I would also check the TPMS that comes with the wheel, because it may not be compatible with the RL system, although I doubt it.

Finally, FWIW, I have an email from Curry Acura Parts asking the same question, could I buy the MDX 19's for the RL, and they said no, it will not work, although they did not say why, and I did not pursue any more since I felt an SUV wheel would be much more substantial (e.g., heavier) than one for a sedan, and that if I were to spend the money, I wanted to get lighter weight also.

The stock RL wheel is 17x8 120x5 +50mm offset 64.1 centerbore hub. My RonJon 19" Legend has all the same parameters except a +41mm offset and clears the brake calipers. Any offset between +41 and +50 should therefore clear. The 8.5" width shouldn't cause a problem.

Should be +55 mm offset, although assuming the same wheel width, offset itself does not guarantee clearance with the brakes, witness RonJon's original +45 design spec which did not fit.

Here is an interesting, and relatively clear article on offset, backspacing, and other wheel measurements.

I was aware his first run with the RonJon Legend didn't fit, but didn't realize the offset was +45mm. Theoretically that doesn't make any sense if the width stays the same. Otherwise, I guess the only way you'll know a wheel will fit is if you actually try to mount it?? You'd think there would be an easier way. Thanks for the link, I hope I didn't muddy the waters too much...

So, did you list the correct offset in your wheels, Dr.Tuna?

Somewhere in the forum there is a thread which Ron introduces the Legends by showing us pics of his prototype, and saying he wanted to decrease the offset to +45 for additional aggressive look, and then the grrr, why are the front calipers so damn big...and he is doing a slight redesign for strength reasons after a fit to the MDX, etc.

So my answer is that the offset is +55 on the stock 17x8 and also on the PAX 480 x 235 (18x8). I believe the A-Spec 18x8 are the same +55.

The offset I listed comes right from RonJon's catalog. And they of course definitely fit the RL with brake caliper clearance. I received some of the first ones designed after the brake caliper mishap!!

Obviously not trying to argue with you but I have an older RonJon catalog as well which shows a 19x8 5x120 +38mm offset RL wheel. This would actually make sense because the wheels that didn't clear the calipers required a 3mm spacer to work, and explains why mine are +41mm. Either way, just trying to help out the OP, I hope I'm not confusing more than helping!!

Here is an email I got from Curry Acura Parts Mgr today.

"Helo [sic] and thanks for contacting us,
The 2005-2008 RL wheels are an 18 X 8 with a 55mm offset and the 2008 MDX are 19 X 8.5 with a 45mm offset. The difference in the width and the offset values will most likley cause the wheels/tires to rub on sharp turns. I would not recommend the use of the MDX 19" wheels on the 2005-2008 RL.
Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks, John"

Call him and talk to him about it. I think the biggest question is not whether it will fit, because they should physically bolt up, but the clearance of the brake calipers. It may also may depend on what size tires you get but if you stay to 245/40-19 you should be OK.

I can't remember what size tires Touge used, but I seem to recall they were slightly smaller than stock.

By the way, my 19x8.5 are 48 mm offset, and they work fine with 255/40-19. No rubbing yet, but I have not actually tried lock to lock.

I should do that tomorrow so I don't get surprised in an emergency maneuver.

Chas,

I'd have to agree with him. My wheels are 19x8.5 and their offset is +38mm. I would venture to say that, even though minimal, the difference would in fact bring the wheels too far out. That is my opinion of course. I'd love to see it in real life; nothing beats that.

Doc, no issues with me. I think you are correct and we have only served to confuse the OP what with talking about OEM, ASpec, RonJons both Prototype and Production.

The current RJ Legends work fine.

***********************

In case anyone is interested, I did Google the site and found this thread which is only interesting because it takes us through the history of those gorgeous Legend wheels...

Post #23 describes the weights along with an estimate of 24 or 25 for the OEMs that Touge describes in another thread as 27lbs
Post #41 describes the change to 41mm offset
Post #61 describes the redesign of the mounting points.
Post #90 shows the beautiful 3mm spacers that Ron so graciously had made at his expense to satisfy customers of the first run if they did not wish to wait for the second production run.

https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-rl-2005-2012-76/new-ronjon-legend-wheel-official-debut-%2A%2Apics-pg-1-a-499021/

Remember all, it is history only, and any issues have been resolved with the second and subsequent production runs of these lovely wheels, and it seems Ron stands behind his product!.

Chas, You can lock them in any way, left or right and You are not gonna rub. Trust me on this. Togue used 255/35/19 tires. I have tried 265/40/18 tires on 18x9 rims with +47 offset without any problems and now I tink I will put 275/40/18 tires just for the test.

Slawke,

Are you talking about your 18" rims? They won't be the same no matter how you look at it because of the added height of the wheels, plus they are 9" wide. Our (Sam's and mine) 19" wheels are both 8.5" which, as far as I can remember, is the widest you can go without buying custom or 3-piece wheels. Sam, Touge, put 255/35-19 tires which comes out to be the same rolling diameter of my set, 245/40-19.

Just food for thought... and as usual, YMMV.

Roy, my old wheels are 19x8x5 with 255/40/19 tires, then I have 18x9 with 265/40/18 tires ( I gonna test them with 275/40/18 tires). Now I have 18x8.5 with 265/40/18 tires. All these wheels are BBS. BTW You can go 9" wide without buying 3-piece wheels, trust me on this Roy.

Hey Slawek, do you have photos of those wide-azz tires on the RL?

I have 265/40/18 on my car right now, no pics but I can take few. I dont't try 275/40/18 yet. 275/40/18 are just very little wider then 265. Just few mm - check Tirerack.

Please do. I am thinking of getting 18x8 wheels but I am not sure how wide I can go, 255/40/18 maybe?

What is the required caliper clearance for our RL's? I see a lot of wheels listed by various compatible wheel lists, but I'm wondering how we can determine what actually fits around the big front caliper.

The MDX 19" is not going to clear the caliper even though the spec says it should.

I got confirmation from Acura technician and they tried on RL and it's not clearing. You'll probably need a 10mm spacer to fit but he strongly discourage that because it will throw off the leverage of the hub bearing and put more stress to it.

I was going to buy them already, but lucky he was very help to confirm that with me.
