Subwoofer smoking/melting problems

Last night I had some really loud buzzing sounds from the sub-woofer in my 06 RL. The sound went away in about 5 min. Woke up this morning on my drive into work and the car started to smell like burning electronics/plastic. I looked at the back window and noticed smoke coming out of the sub-woofer , opened the trunk and found the magnet dropped out of the back of the sub woofer and there was melted solder all over the floor of the trunk. I think the sub-woofer got so hot melted the solder and dropped the magnet!!!

Has anyone had this problem? I think I need to disconnect the sub-woofer but need to know how to get to the harness. Any help would be appreciated

No options or upgrades this is strictly factory RL with the BOSE system. Here are the pics. First one is the de-soldered magnet melted into my rubbermaid container and pieces of solder drips. second one is what is left of the bottom of the speaker. If anyone knows how to disconnect this speaker I would appreciate it. It is still smoking when I drive with or without the radio on.

You have to have pics hosted on an external site like photobucket, flickr, etc

LOL at attaching photos from the hard drive. Are you Claire?

Something had to have shorted in the speaker. The fastest way to fix the smoke is to pull the #2 fuse from the passenger side kick panel (page 458 of the manual). This is the fuse to the amp in the right quarter panel of the trunk. You will lose all of the sound from your speakers.

Unless you can pull back the black felt in your picture and access the wires there, the next fastest way is to pull the trunk linings to access the amp. Even then, the woofer wires are part of a harness that will disable other speakers and possibly power to the amp.

The only way to access the woofer is through the rear deck which requires A LOT of work (supposedly).

If you are still driving it, pull over, then call and make sure your insurance is on full coverage.

It takes 350+ degrees F to melt solder like that so you might want to disconnect something as a first step.

what type of music are you listening to?

Thanks for everyones help

Got home tonight climbed into the trunk and pulled the voice coil out and disconnected the wires to the speaker. No more smoke.... I have attached the latest pictures of the burned mess. Looks like I'm in the market for a new Sub any suggestions??

Thanks again to everyone, I appreciate the comments.

thank you for continuing to update us with pics.

If I were you I would invest some time/money in figuring out why this happened before you put anything else in its place.

Hopefully its just a speaker failure

I don't see how it could be anything but a speaker failure. The heat is going to come from the location of the short. The amp would have to be pumping WAY more current than it is capable of to melt a functional speaker.

Yes I agree. Looks to be speaker failure. Prior to the meltdown I had some buzzing from the speaker then smelled the burn. Must have burned out the coil caused a resistive path to ground and just over-heated. Glad I was able to pull it before more damage was caused. Dont think the amp was effected or the cause as the rest of the channels off the amp are good and sound is clear. We shall see,
