i just got back from the dealer, and i'm pissed off.
first of, my battery is dead and my car was left outside with the hood opened (i'm having a talk with someone tomorrow) and the camera and cables were installed successfully, but....
Liek the technician mentioned before, it ain't easy, and now they need Acura Tech support to complete the programming and that will be done in the morning.
i took some pictures with my phone and i'll try to post them.
The camera replaces the trunk lid, and the trunk lid it self is moved to the right side of the trunk, it to the right of the right license plate light and its in the size of dime.
I'll post the pictures in few minutes and hopefully they are clear enough for everyone.

Couldn't they just borrow a disk from one of the 2006's on there lot to see if the camera is going to work. They could either let you keep the disk and replace the 2006 one when your's arrives or put the 2005 disk back in your car once they verify it is working and have you come back when the 2006 disk arrives.

All that was done with 06 DVD disk, and the programming is required after the updated disk is installed. i don't know if that is a way to prevent poeple from installing the camera them selves, but the tech tried, and put in mind that it took him 10 hours to instal the camera plus the connection.

ok, aparently there is a converter that come with 06 RL and unavailable for 05, and thats what caused all the delay beside waiting on the updated DVD disk.
So, the 06 DVD disl is not enough to have the camera work, and as i was told, Acura had no plans to accessories 05 with rear view camera. Bullshit

Qatar,

Can you post the part number of the converter and how much they have charged you for it? Also it would be great if you could find out how much extra work was done to install this converted?
Thanks for all the help.

So.....should the rest of us attempt the purchase and installation of the rear view camera on our '05s? I really want one, but out here in the boondocks, I worry my local dealer won't be up to speed on such a complicated installation job. Thoughts?

My car is still in the dealer, and they are trying everything, and so far i don't have the part numbers, but i'll make sure i get everything when picking up my car.
Why don't we try this, lets just wait until the dealer is done with my car, and see if it'll work or not, instead of others buying and ending up like me.

Like Qatar says, I think that we have to be patient and let Acura work the bugs out. I am very confident that Acura will come up with a retrofit "kit" for the dealers to make the camera work on the '05. Unfortunately for Qatar, he is acting as a "guinea pig" for this whole process which should eventually help the rest of us. Thanks Qatar.

I agree totally. Qatar how much have spent or plan on spending for the retrofit of the backup camera?

i was quoted for $495.00 camera and $180.00 labor. Plus $185.00 for the 06 DVD disk.
So, lets say around $900.00
I was also told that there are at least 3 dealers in the area who have the RL on stand by after installing the camera, due to thier unawareness of the converter.

Thanks for the input. How much was the converter? Do you have a part number for it?

I wanted to add some input on adding a backup camera to the 2005 RL. I have been monitoring this forum for some time and been in contact with my local dealer for the past month contemplating and wishing to be able to have a backup camera installed. I was told by my dealer who called his regional Acura management that the camera available for the 2006 RL is currently not available for the 2005 and would not be supported under my warranty. He acted like he could try to install one but this would not be supported under warranty by Acura, therefore, he in good faith could not rec. it to me. I had a bad feeling that Qatar's experience would turn out complicated although I greatly admire him for being a trend setter. I do believe that Acura will eventually offer an upgrade kit if the demand keeps up. I have contacted the head corporate guys in California asking for some official timetable information and will post that as soon as I hear anything. Thanks to everybody for there incredible information provided on this forum. It is so helpful to me who is a novice at posting threads and being in forums such as this. I appreciate everyone's knowledge.

I was also wondering if anybody had any experience with Verizon's Onstar phone plan which allows you to use the RL's Onstar just like your personal cell phone without getting charged the outrageous "Onstar units" charges?

thats weird, because my first question regarding the rear view camera once it was ordered, was warranty, and as i was told, Acura district manager stated that the camera will be warranted for couple of years (i don't remember how long) but i'll verify this information tomorrow. I don't know why Acura sources have different information regarding the same thing.

You did everything right except you posted it in the general forum. The thread should have been posted in the audo/electronics subforum. I moved it for you and responded to your question. Good luck.

My dealer just called me back and said that back up camera can't be installed on 05's because the control unit is different. He said that it already has been tired, with no success.

I believe that this is not true. I think only DVD needs to be changed to 06, not the control unit. What do you guys think?

I think this is the exact problem Qatar's dealer is having so it may be true, we'll just have to wait and see.

OTOH, the benefit of the stock approach is the updated nav DVD, which is not part of the aftermarket approach. Am I missing something here?

I just came back from the dealer, and i'm so tired of going there.
This time i showed patience and listened.
The service manager and parts manager both came outside and spoke with me.
The problem with 05 RL's is not the DVD unit at all, because even after inserting the updated 06 DVD disk in its unit, it doesn't update as it should, and the only problem found is the relay which is found in 06 RL's only, but the question is where to place it.
Chevy Chase Acura in MD is having the same problem with their 05 RL as well, and according the parts manager, there is no question about the rear view camera functionality and fittment in 05 RL. All the problems we're going through is due to our small knowledge of the camera on the RL.
I got clear pictures this time if vp911 will help me post them

Qatar, Thanks for the update. Sorry to hear that it takes so long, but good to hear that the only problem is the relay. Hopefully they can get it going.

now, i don't think i care about how long it takes, as long as they get it right and working.
It should be a matter of days before they resolve the problem now that its more than one dealer which is experiencing this issue

One that Chevy Chase Acura is having the same problem with my RL cause I ask them to call Raldey which they also installed camera on RL which is yours. What I spoke with my rep that he said they need to wait until acura's engeener find out what dealer has to do because if gear put on reverse then camera should activate but it doesnt so they need more time. It seems like matter of time.
