Rear-View Camera Avaliable on 06 RL as Accessory

Rear-View Camera is avaliable on 06 RL as Accessory.

Rear-View Camera $320.00
Rear-View Camera Attachment $175.00

Wondering if this could be added to 05's as well.

We need to start pinging the good accessory dealers (Curry, AOE, Laks, etc) to get part numbers and pricing. If this does install plug-and-play on the '05, there should be a lot of people buying this.

Here's the info from the Acura web site:

Rear-View Camera
  • Allows the driver to see behind the vehicle while backing up
  • Utilizes the navigation screen to provide a clear, full color, wide-angle view
  • Mounts above the license plate frame; separate attachment required for installation
MSRP:$495.00

(Installation costs not included)

This suggests to me that the separate attachment is an additional cost over and above the $495 plus installation.

When someone contacts a dealer, please confirm one way or the other.

Hard to believe this accessory is less expensive than back up sensors. Nice but odd

You corrected it before I could get back.

When I configured the car with the camera, the pricing summary actually shows:

Rear-View Camera $320.00
Rear-View Camera Attachment $175.00

(Installation costs not included)

$495 retail plus installation makes this a reasonably priced option for me, assuming that it can be installed on the '05 without additional expense.

"The back-up camera (with attachment kit) is $365.00 but we do not believe it will work on the 2005. The system is wired and integrated with the nav unit and they are definitely different from 2005 and 2006. Our guess is that the 2005 nav unit is unable to accommodate the camera system. The instructions are attached and freight is $10.00.

Sorry,

Since this thread and the other rear view camera thread seem to be discussing the same thing, I am going to merge the two.

What exactly is different? We already know we can update the software in the '05 to use the camera. Did he send you the instructions? If you can't host them, I can. - asuitedpair@comcast.net

I wouldn't rely too much on "Scott's" reply just yet.

Thanks for merging. Good idea.

I called my dealer (talked to both parts and service departments) and they are investigating the application of the 06 backup camera accessory for install on an 05 RL. They just found out about the camera accessory yesterday and don't yet have it in stock in the parts department. There is a chance that the 06 may come prewired for it in some way that the 05 is not but they don't know for sure. They will investigate and get back to me. I suppose if the 06 is prewired that doen't mean it can't go in to an 05, it just may take more labor ($$) to do so. I'll report back when I get news. Anyone else have different feedback from their dealers?

PS, just saw VP911's information via email response. :-(

If it does work, it will likely require the DVD update as well.

Now if they would make the rear facing camera turn when you turn the steering wheel, (as some headlights do) that would be awesome. You could scan left and right behind the car before backing up. Talk about making life easy!

Looks like a rather easy DIY project. Shocked to see it involves cutting/sawing.

Note: None of the wiring is pre-existing. That's a good sign. I can't see how this wouldn't work on an '05. We'll just need to update the DVD software as well to make this work. Tack on another $185.

Vik,

Please email me the instructions as well-I just bought the backup sesnsors from DCD and may be able to determine the cable commonality between the two.

I'm not. Don't you want the camera centered directly behind the vehicle?

I can't put the cam in anyways - the laser shifter would be blocking the view of the cam.

My RL service folks called back and said that their information is that the 06 has a wiring "harnass" built into it for the camera accessory installation and the 05 does not have this. Presumably the installation kit connects into this harnass.

The bottom line is that the installation kit can't be installed in an 05 because of the absence of the wiring harnass. Assuming this early report turns out to be the case, I would imagine some smart folks here will figure out a work around.

If that is the case, we would need to find out if the navi dvd drive was physically modified to add support for this or if there is already a connection on the back to plug the wiring harness into. We can get the wiring that is in the 06 from our parts departments - it is just a matter of them ordering it and the cost. If it requires replacement of the dvd-rom drive then we cannot do it as the drive is roughly 2000 dollars.

If this is the case, then why do you have to remove the Navi control unit to install the camera, according to the instructions? Bottom line, someone needs to check our Navi spec on 05 to see if camera can be added.

Read the instructions.

The kit comes with a harness (the ONLY harness) that connects directly to the Navi unit. It even explains how to run the harness wire from the camera to the unit.

Most of these dealers are going to give the safe answer until they know for sure. Likely after they install the first kit on an '06.

If the hardware is the same and the only difference is the software, this should install no problemo on an '05.

Does someone have more information about 05 RL's Navi. system? I am interested to see who makes the Navi/Spec.

Or if you don't want to update your navi dvd, ask your dealer to borrow the DVD from an 06' RL for a few minutes to update your software. In the TL you could update the software from the DVD and replace the old DVD in order to still use the old maps but have the new software installed.

Neat trick (06 update by borrowing a disc)

I just looked at the instructions. Wow. Thorough. They leave very little to chance I must say. With the right amount of patience and brass balls this should be doable.

The installation kit includes the camera harness. Step 28 of the Instructions references that the included camera harness is routed along the "vehicle's harness" but the latter harness is not included in the kit and is apparently located on the underside of the lid of the 06 RL. The instructions presume that the vehicle harness is already in the 06 RL. Does the 05 already have the "vehicle harness", or perhaps that harness is irrelevant?

I am no mechanic so plead ignorance to the inner workings of the RL. My job is to drive and enjoy it, which I do plenty of.

This sounds like a firmware update for the DVD or the navi computer-is that what you mean?

Yes, there is already wiring there. I have taken apart the area to run the wiring for the laser shifter. There are hundreds of wiring harnesses throughout teh vehicle, they are just saying to run the new camera harness along with it.

I meant for the navi computer. The RL may NOT be capable of putting back the old dvd, but based on the TSX and TL I believe it would be fine to do so.

It would seem that if the only SW update to the navi CPU is for the rear camera, then your assumption would be correct. I'd love to get my hands on the new DVD and pick it apart and see what was on it.

Since the camera and sensor harnesses appear to be independent, I am still hopeful that I can install the sensors on the front and the camera on the rear. My wife thinks I am crazy for even considering such a hack, but there is a bit of Sir Edmund Hillary in me (ie, because it's there) that wants to do this just because it might be possible. My biggest enemy is the time required to figure out how to do this...

Acura would be foolish to not supply a "retrofit" kit for the 05 RL to make the backup camera installation possible. There is obviously a market for this accessory. I think that we just have to be patient. My guess is that there will be another "kit" to buy for the 05 which will jack up the price a bit and the installation will be a bit more costly, but it will be available by the spring. Just as well, because where I come from any backup camera will be covered with snow until then anyway.

Yes, the 05 JDM Legend is offered with rear and front view cameras but i don't know about Europe. I thought the Legend isn't released yet in Europe.

The parts manager at Radley Acura confirmed that the 06 RL Rear view camera will fit and work on the 2005 RL after speaking with Honda/Acura district representative and it should also work with flat panneled installed backup sensors (parking assistant).
I placed my order and it shouldn't take more than 4 weeks.
If anybody wants more info, you can contact Radley Acura (703) 824-5700 and ask for the parts manager
