You betcha. How could it possibly work with the 05 software? Take a look at the list of improvements for the latest disk. It says something about the backup cam. That got this whole investigation started

The parts manager said that worse case senario, we'll have to update our navi DVD's, but not DVD unit, and all that is according to the Honda/Acura rep, who confirmed it twice.
As for labor, he said i'll be informed next week.
Someone mentioned a while back that borrowing a Navi DVD from 06 RL will update a 05, well thats correct, but the updated (06) navi DVD must be kept in the unit so the update will be effective, and once you remove and put the old one back, your gone back to zero.
Basically, we have to purchase 2006 RL updated navi dvd version 4.31

The maps will not stay updated if you switch back to the 05' DVD- but the software will stay updated - UNLESS you lose power to your car and need to jump start it - then you would lose the updated software also as it would reload the software from the DVD that is currently in the drive.

My turn to chime in..

It's been raining like hell out here recently and I had to parallel park the RL in the dark in NYC (tight spaces). The street lights were not working and the car behind me was black. The rain on the rear window in conjunction with the darkness and black car made it absolutely impossible to park without 'feeling' my way through.

It was during this time I realized how nice it wouldve been if I had the camera..

Oh, and about the parking spot, I gave up and found another spot 20 minutes later

I wonder if the navi computer would actually override a firmware version that was greater than that in the DVD. II kno that when I do firmware upgrades for some other things (like my Mac), it willl refuse a firmware upload if the f/w is an earlier version.

06 RL rear view camera on 05 RL

ok, i couldn't find the last thread so i had to open a new one.
Well, i went to my dealer early this afternoon and found the parts which i've ordered last week.
The 2006 RL rear view camera ($490).
Labor in Acura book is 4 hours which is around $400, but my dealer is getting the work done for $180 and i'll drop off my car this Friday and hae them install the camera plus fix the damn problem with the squeaking brakes.
Now the issue with the rear view camera is solved, even though i would have prefered factory over dealer installation. but how about the damn cooled seats?
Some might not like this, but providing the Canadian Rl's with that feature because they don't have nav traffic and xm is so stupid from Honda, because not all of us are going to subscribe with xm and nav traffic.
We get a year free but after that we have to pay, well i don't see Canadians paying for their cooled seats because its free as appose to nav traffic which i don't really use.
And i'm planning to move to Arizona.
But, thats another issue.
As soon as the camera is on, i'll take pictures and post the diiferences between it and the M45 that i had a while back

Nevermind-I found the instructions on the other thread, which have the part numbers in it. If the list price for this accessory is $495, we should see a street price of around $380-$400 or so, since the online vendors seem to discount the accessories by 20-25% off list.

i test drove both the m35 and the 2006 rl today

the backup camera on the m is fantastic - it has in addition to the camera some computerized gizmo that superimposes soem lines on the image that show exactly the trajectory your car will be trvelling along if you keep reversing the way you are and changes as you move or turn the wheel. this makes it way better than just a camera.

i tried it out in a very very tight parking space where woithout camera and the assiting lines no way i could have gotten in to park - at ;least with my reversing skills

any idea if the rl's camera will have something equvalent or not

I took my Rl this morning to have the rear view camera installed plus repair the squeaking brakes, the camera was installed as i was told, but the wiring required more time than they've expected, so i won't get my ride till Monday.
I believe this delay is due to the missing harness in the 05 RL, because something in the rear required conversion and modification, i don't know exactly what it was, but i'll inquire.

Exactly. I was similarly impressed with the M's backup camera when I test drove the car a few weeks ago. I posted here about that experience. I had a subjective impression at the time that the M's camera offered a more expansive view than the one in a Honda van loaner I drove, but I simply hated driving a van and that may not have been an accurate observation.

I parallel parked for the first time last week (I sometimes park so far from where I need to be that I have to worry about tractors or the local constabulary mistaking the car for abandoned!). Of course, having the back up camera would have been great, but I found that the back up sensors made getting into that space easier. I'm still having difficulty judging how close the front bumper is to a curb but haven't scraped it again. I've been used to driving a lower and somewhat smaller car.

I don't think we have the option of chosing the cameras location, it mounts in one place and i assume its right above the the license plate and below the chrome strip.
I'll pass by the dealer and check

the mounting location is in the instructions . . . the camera replaces the trunk button; which gets relocated.

Ding ding! Indeed. I think everyone who's considering this package should first read the instructions so they know what they're getting into.

Question Dealers saying no retrofit

Qatar...real curious to hear how the installation of the back-up camera turned out. I contacted two dealers in Southern CA and they both said the camera could not be retrofitted to the '05 due to the wiring harness differences.

I would like to hear if others received the same answers?? Thanks

i went by the dealer this afternoon, and the camera was mounted in the middle of the trunl lid, and as mentioned earlier it replaces the trunk lid.
The trunk was pretty much stripped down and there was a long cable coming out of the camera and i don't know where it goes. The worrying part is, the technician has been working on the car since 7 am, and still having problem with the installation, and as he said (its more complicated than you think) and he estimated 8 pm to pick up the car or probably tomorrow. Now, i don't think that we'll be able to do this home, because it does look like rocket science.
I'm waiting on the call from the dealer and i'll post as soon as i get any update

Thanks for your update. Let, us know if DVD disk had to be updated. Also, I think since it is their fist install, it will take some time to learn how to do it.

That is on the left side. The one that they are installing in our RLs will be where the button to open the trunk is.

I am sure honda would do the 3d nav better than nissan/infiniti - but I really hated the 3d nav in my fx35. It was really crappy IMHO

I was actually thinking about that and how bad it could go wrong if done poorly. From the pics though, Honda has it pretty well figured out. Did yours just zoom/change to 3D once you get close to a turn etc or could you make it like that all of the time?

There was an option for an overhead view simply like the way it is in the acuras (and everybody elses) and then the birdseye view which was always in 3D. It was horrible - I hated it.

I got a call from my service consultant, and the DVD requires update, so they had to order the DVD and it'll take probably two or three days.
I'll pick up my car tomorrow take pictures and post and here is what he told me "This is the most complicated and sensative operation ever on the RL, because its the only camera installed option in Acura lineup, any screwup will cost a lot".
I'll post the pic's tomorrow after picking up my ride.

Good luck Qatar! I don't envy you. The dealers seem to really struggle with the service on the "technologically advanced" cars. I think they may be right that the retrofit is really not appropriate for the '05's.

Hey pek01, I think that install on 06 is a difficult as on 05's. The only thing that is different is the Nav DVD.
