Anybody have external "whine" noise diagnosed as problem with rear drive shaft propeller(?) requiring replacement of rear drive shaft?

 

i have a very slight whine at about 70mph on my 05. was planning a trip to the dealership next week (for it and a few other things). any more information to share about yours?

 

I had the issue a month ago. Its gonna cost about 2000 to fix unless you have the acura extended warranty than its free.

 

I had the same issue. Had the propeller shaft bearing replaced under warranty. No issues to date...been about 9 months.

 

how many miles did u guys have on your car when it occurred and what year is your car?

 

'05 RL. Had about 75K when I had it replaced.

 

My car has a whine as well (2007 with 30K) but I can't discern if it's an engine noise (supposed to be there) or if something is wrong with the driveshaft.

 

I had (have) this. Maybe I'm getting hard of hearing, but I don't hear it so much anymore. I heard when the car was quite new during a Vegas road trip -- it seemed to be coming from the rear of the car. I asked the dealer about it at the time, but they couldn't reproduce. 4 years later, I keep an ear out but don't hear it. It was quite faint, which made me think it was just normal mechanically sounding stuff. I could also hear a high-pitched sound outside the car when it's idling that certainly isn't the driveshaft.

The general symptoms seem to occur when the car is traveling at slower speeds or when it is somewhat cold outside. YMMV.

Whine, Whistle, or Howl Between 30 and 40 MPH

Currently Applies To: ’05–08 RL

A bad propeller shaft center support bearing can
cause an annoying whine, whistle, or howl if you’re
driving between 30 and 40 mph and the bearing is
cold.

To check for a bad center support bearing, here’s
what you need to do:
1. Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure that it’s
securely supported.
2. Have someone start the engine, shift into Drive,
and slowly accelerate until the speedometer
reads between 30 and 40 mph.
3. While standing under the center support bearing,
use a stethoscope to listen for noise coming from
the bearing.
• If you hear noise coming from the bearing,
replace the propeller shaft. Refer to pages
16-42 thru 16-45 of the ’05–08 RL S/M.
(Online, enter keyword PROPELLER and
select Propeller Shaft Removal and
Propeller Shaft Installation from the list.)
• If the bearing is quiet, continue with normal
troubleshooting.
