Smile programming instructions for FOB key?

I just bought a 2005 RL with only the #1 FOB key. After looking at posts on this site, I decided to buy a used #2 FOB key on ebay for $79, rather that pay the dealer $315 for a new one. The used FOB is on its way via UPS ground. I plan to go to the dealer and buy the blank key and have it cut ($36 for key). Is it possible for me to program the 2nd FOB myself? The dealer said they would charge $99 to program the new (or used) FOB, 1 hour labor charge.

Has anyone programmed the FOB themself? Is it possible without fancy electronic gagetry? Thanks!

I love my new Acura and appreciate all the info on this site. My next project will be to install a PA15-HON2 ipod interface.

Hello, welcome to the forum. Unfortunately this is not an easy job, it requires the dealer to do it. Which is a GOOD thing, if you think about it....you simply would not want people buying key fobs on EBay and linking them to your car without you knowing This is definitely a dealer item, and thats a good thing.

Thanks Chris. Good points about security. At least I saved some $ purchasing a used fob. I'll report back to the forum after obtaining fob and key cutting / programming at the dealer.

I received the 2nd FOB through an ebay purchase and had it programmed and a new blank key cut at the dealer. Works great. Total cost = used FOB $80, blank key $36, labor at dealer $100 = $216 grand total. Note: several used FOBs for sale on ebay, make sure you can specify #1 or #2 before purchasing.

i was reading that the car can recall a total of 3 fobs? if you ever want a backup to your fob 1 and 2-- does anyone know how the 3rd fob works?
$36 to cut a key is not bad-- which Acura dealership is this?

I just bought an extra set on Ebay as a backup. I wont have the keys cut in the new ones, Ill just take the key portion out of the older (orig) ones and stick them in the new ones ( unless I loose a old FOB AND key).

Woodek, when you are ready to use your backup, you will need to take the FOB to the dealer and have it programmed for your vehicle with the key. That will cost ~$99. The extra key, ~$39, is the least expensive part of the whole deal, if you think you need a backup for that too (might loose the FOB & key together). I never take the key out of the FOB myself.

$39 was the price I paid for the blank key (part only). $99 (1 hour labor) is what I paid to have the key cut and the FOB programmed to match FOB #1. You guys might get a slightly better price in the L48, no Ak markup ; )
