OMG! Someone's finally doing Weather Radar!
Yeeeee-HA! I've been campaigning for this for years. Weather radar overlaid on your nav screen. It's brilliant! (And it's Cadillac who'll have it first????
)
So you're on a road trip, out in the wilds of Colorado (or Upstate New York, or wherever), and the skies have turned a little nasty. Which way is it moving ... your way? away from you? across your path? Is it just some rain, or are there some pretty rough thunderstorms in there? Do you want to maybe stop and get some lunch and let it pass by, or do you need to hurry on to make your destination for the night?
Press a button (or speak a command in an RL) and live weather radar is overlaid on your nav screen. After a couple of minutes, you see that it's going to pass to the west of you, so you go on in confidence, knowing what's ahead.
Sweet.
Acura, pleeeeeze put this in the next RL. Pleeeeeze.

Very nice. I could also see them adding weather alerts to inform you of severe thunderstorms, tornados, etc. Just like the house weather alarm I have. More information is all good stuff.
I wonder if there would be an issue with providing that in the current RL. Sounds like must a software update.

Interesting... I like toys but I probably wouldn't pay for this one. It's not like you are going to reroute your trip due to weather, unless it's a blizzard or something. And weather patterns are normally similar over hundreds of miles so you probably couldn't avoid it if you wanted to. It's not like nav traffic which there would be an accident but 5miles way there if a clear road.
I would like a 7 day forecast option built into the navi. Like weather.com. You can put in the zip and it will show you the next week in pictures or in text. It should be free w/ nav traffic or w/ reg xm. They could even post an add on the screen to offet the developement costs.
Did I just give away a millon dollar idea???

Heh. I'd buy it in a heartbeat. We're flexible enough that if I saw there was a line of thunderstorms passing through the Rapid City/Mount Rushmore area, I might alter my route and go see something else first, then come back to Rushmore on the way back.
But more than anything, it's a matter of feeling like I'm "blind" to weather when I'm traveling. I hate to wait until the end of the day to watch the weather channel at the motel and see that I've been driving in rain all day. Duh. Like Mikey says, more information is good, and I think that's especially true when traveling cross country. How many times have you scanned the dark skies ahead and said, "Boy, that's looking rough up ahead. Wonder if we're going to get blown away, or if it'll miss us."
I have to admit that part of my interest comes from my years of cross-country motorcycle touring, when weather was a *big* issue. But I'm always watching the skies when I travel ... never know when you'll get hailed on, run into 8" snow (like I did once in JUNE in Montana!), or be caught up in a day-long downpour.

You don't have to wait to get to motel. turn to xm traffic and weather there is a station for every large metro area. Or listen to the weather channel on xm.
Weather is a bigger issue on a bike.

I'd subscribe. I regularly check the weather scans before leaving the office. We can have nasty summer storms here and they hit typically at the end of the workday. I often wait an extra 15 minutes or so or leave early when I see a squall coming through. The roads here flood easily and needless to say drivers are a challenge when the weather is good. Driving a 10 mile bay bridge in a wicked summer thunderstorm is something I avoid.
On a lighter side, I like to avoid the scattered showers after I have just detailed the car.

I'd definitely subscribe to that. The weather patterns in my area vary by location and so I'd definitely make use of it.
briny: when you reply (not "quick reply" at the bottom of the page, just hit "post reply" or "go advanced"), scroll down below the text box and you will see "miscellaneous options". Check "show your signature", then "submit reply", and you're done.
Cool. I can't tell you how many times I've looked at the NAV screen and thought about having a weather map overlaid onto it.
On the other hand, we can tune to XM weather and hear reports for most major metropolitan areas.
This is a logical extension of using the map.
