New RL owner Navi ?

Hello,
I recently bought a 05 RL and it did not come with the navigation disc. I looked on ebay and found a few. I know the 4.64 is the newest but i found a 4.62 version pretty cheap. My question is do I need anything else. Like maybe an update disc? I read about that on here from searching but can't get a clear answer. Also I have seen that there are torrent downloads of the navigation cd. Has anybody used that? If so how? I appreciate any help and look forward to learning alot about the car! Thanks

I would suggest going with the most recent version.

Welcome to AZ!

The main reason you would consider 4.64 rather than 4.62 is because 4.62 caused many installation problems in 2005s and some 2006s (like mine). If you purchased the 4.62, you'd have to get some intervening versions in order for it to work properly, and there's no guarantee that it would work at all. In general, avoid 4.62 like the plague. There's a thread on 4.64 in which 2005 owners are still trying to get it to work properly. The latest version that we know to work in the 2005 is 4.55. If you want a plug and play solution, 4.55 is your best bet for now until we know for sure 4.64 works in 2005 RLs.

We have one report that 4.64 does work in 2005s, but that was after a navi problem was found in the gent's car and the system was replaced.

https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-rl-audio-bluetooth-electronics-navigation-90/4-64-available-501485/

Moving to Audio, Bluetooth, etc... subforum.

Don't forget to post your purchase details in the RL Owner Sign In thread at the top of the main RL forum.

I think 4.63 is working for the '05 RL (its probably the torrent version you'd seen) but you have to do an incrimental update first with 4.31 or 4.55 before 4.63 will load.
4.62 was a terrible release, so definitely skip that one. The disc boots up really slow before the "ok" message appears.

i just went ahead and bought 4.55 off ebay for 60 bucks. I might upgrade later but the navi on these cars suck. If you really NEED navigation you would be so much better off to just go get a stand alone unit. I just mainly like it for looks (and it came with the car!) I know it's vain.

Pardon?

You come to an enthusiasts forum for the Acura RL and ask for information about the car. You get some gracious responses and helpful information. Then you make a statement "the navi on these cars suck". How endearing.

You could have searched for that information people took time to respond to you with. You may have also found in your search that the majority of members here vehemently defend Acura's NAVI and telematics the best in the business, DVD upgrades aside.

Next time you are looking for a handout, a simple 'thanks' will do.

I'm not offended, but having owned, driven and used cars with onboard and "stand alone" navigation, I wonder what you mean and how you could come to such a conclusion. Sure, I can't change the vehicle icon or upload custom POI's like I do with the Garmin dashboard units, but I've got a larger screen, better rerouting, traffic, bluetooth, eye-pleasing maps with simple controls...

There's a reason that Alpine's nav units are well-reputed, and (if you don't know) that's precisely what's in your Acura. I'm sorry you can't have a firetruck or rocket for your icon, but I think you may find your appreciation of your nav system perks up a bit with use.

If you ever need an energy boost, go test drive a Mercedes CLS 500 or some other uber-benz. Try to use the Nav system without crashing the car.

I can understand the OP's frustration. The 2005 owners got shafted and it's amazing that we don't hear more complaints. When paying $2500+ for an onboard navi, it is reasonable to expect reasonable upgradeability. It's just not acceptable that the latest navi version that is bulletproof on a 2005 is 4.55.

No need to beat up on the guy, he just wanted info and then vented when he found what a hassle it was to get what he needed.

I agree with the frustration on the upgrade path as I am in the same boat, but I don't think the navi "sucks". It still has one of the best UIs of all and its basically 4 yrs old.

Good point. The interface is good, but the support is what really sucks.

my screen name is no degree because it's ironic I have my current career without having one. I'm 25 and live well only by my own drive and determination. Now back on point. I did search multiple post and the info on here isn't as easy to obtain as other forums I use frequently (I recently built myself a 631hp eclipse gs-t). Not a knock on this forum there is just not as much of a forum backing due the the number of RL owners as say a mustang. Also I find it crazy that if I want to get a "realatively" updated disc (as from "searching" i found can be over a year old in development) I have to pay 185 dollars. Only to then find out that I can't do that I have to buy another disc and then "maybe" it might work. Sounds like horse crap. I can buy a sweet garmen for 250 or less and updates are free for life. Also my best friend has a new TSX (which most say have a better navi system) and a stand alone and from actual use says that the TSX doesn't compare in being even close as accurate or reliable (when he drove downtown in chicago it constantly lost him due to the tall buildings) but his stand alone worked flawless. Also from "searching" I found there are many others that feel the same way so don't act like i'm the odd man out. Lastly, TampaRL, if your looking for your "thanks" it's in post #5. Later

I was not 'looking' for your thanks. And yes I did see it in post #5. It was the backhanded attitude you thow into the faces of members who took the time to answer your queries afterwards that the NAVI 'sucks'.

You posts speak for themselves.

"Next time you are looking for a handout, a simple 'thanks' will do." It sure does sound like you were looking for a thanks?
In my post I said:
"i just went ahead and bought 4.55 off ebay for 60 bucks."
I was stating what I had done as recommended
"I might upgrade later but the navi on these cars suck."
Again having to buy multiple disc to upgrade to only find out that it might not work? Sounds like it sucks to me!
"If you really NEED navigation you would be so much better off to just go get a stand alone unit."
Just an opinion given what I have seen, heard, and experienced.

Where in that did I show a backhanded attitude? Is it because I think that navigation sucks? I feel I have very good reason. Did you design the navigation system in these cars? If not why so offended. And I didn't have the opinion that the Navi "sucks" till the members took the time to answer my question. I guess from now on in this forum you can not change your opinion on something after you have been given the correct information. The only person that really gave me any information is NeuronBob and he understands what i'm saying buy "it sucks" frankly the only person that seems aggrevated that I said it sucks is you and you didnt even post! I guess my post speak for themselves.

Man the economy must have everyone's knickers in a bind--unusual for this group. The OP asked a simple question and got upset for the reason I stated above. C'mon folks, behave and move on. Think "positive Dow....." ommmmmmmm.........
