4.64 Available!
Do we know if its got updated 2008 (ie calendar year 2007) maps or just tweaks to make it work better than the originally planned 4.62 release? I would expect a 2008 version of the Nav disc to have a release verion of 4.7x rather than 4.6x? Especially since release 4.63 still has "2007" (ie calendar year 2006 Zagats).
4.64
Talked to Alpine today and they said the 4.64 that just became available is data from the end of 2007. I asked if a newer version will be coming in the fall why would I pay $185 for data that is 8 1/2 months old. I will wait. My street that is 1 1/2 years old is not on the 4.64.

Did they say if a newer version (ie. v.4.7x) will be coming out in the fall, or is this disc all we get for this year?
Btw, the most recent date of the data files on the the v.4.63 disc is from Jan 23, 2008, but that in itself gives no indication of when the data itself was actually collected.

I started to edit my last post but ran out of time to do it (you can only edit a posting on these boards for the first 5 min) so I will finish what I was trying to write above.
The most recent date of the data files on the v.4.63 disc is from Jan 23, 2008 while the most recent date of the data files on the v.4.62 disc is March 17, 2007, so maybe it is possble that release 4.64 is all we get for calendar year 2008. I was originally thinking that the 2008 disc would have a release version number with a 4.7x but given the 10 month interval in file dates between versions .62 and .63, it looks like an small incremental increase in the release version can evidence a wholly updated database.

I asked her and she said at this time they did not know.
It is interesting that the map updates for 4.64 look to be the same as 4.62. They also seem to have the same software updates. I am not sure how much of the database is really that new from the Fall 2007 version, the buggy 4.62--I think that 4.63 and 4.64 are bug fixes for the different versions of nav systems out there...
For example, if you know Danville, VA which was an update in 4.62, there is NOT that much to update that the area warrants another update in 4.64. I can think of other places that grow a lot faster and have many more new developments than Danville.

Has anyone stopped to think of the value of what $191 gets you? It seems to me that in this day and age of software for everything that this toy is too expensive. I would even venture to say that if you have paid the big bucks for this feature then "free" updates for as long as the original owner owns the car would be reasonable. I also think that most owners do not upgrade ever but if a flyer went out to owners of a $25 upgrade then a lot of people would do it. $191 outlay for a few updates seems to make the original disc worth thousands.
Correct. Version 4.63 became available (original DVD, not just a bootleg copy) from several sellers very shortly after it became available from Alpine. If you can wait a month, it will certainly be out there at a discount.
I'll put forth the following from the web site:
This is called the "2008 Update" disk.
v4.62 is no longer listed in the "update information area" ... it lists 4.56 as the 2007 update, then jumps straight to 4.64 as the 2008 update. The 2008 update mentions that one of the modifications was loss of the male voice (which was previously listed as a modification for 4.62.
It looks like, from this information:
- 4.64 is a repackaged 4.62
- It is *the* update for 2008 (we're a bit late in the year for them to put another forth, given how long it took them to fix the *real* 2007 update (4.62) disk.
And I agree with what somebody has already said. At $25 or even $50 a year, they'd sell so many more of these that they'd probably make the same amount of profit. They really should do some basic economic analysis.
My '06 came with an '05 disk, so in '06, I figured I'd just wait for the '07 disk to upgrade and I'm probably one of the staunchest allies of anti-piracy laws, but given how the Alpine people have taken sooo long to release what is really last year's disk, the way they kept us in the dark and gave bad/vague answers whenever you'd call, etc, I actually can't blame people for waiting on a pirated copy.
That being said, I'm ordering my original today.

So has anyone done the upgrade directly from base 05 RL yet (4.13b I think). I was one of the "early adopters" for the problematic release earlier this year. I would like to upgrade but would like to know if anyone has successfully done it yet from the 05 base release. I've read most of the posts on 4.64 and didn't see one that seemed to be 05 upgrade directly from 4.13b.
Thanks...
Thanks...
The bugs are documented somewhere in the forum, but the search does not yet work. IIRC the bugs mostly happened with 05 definitely, and some 06 upgrading from 4.1x and 4.3x. I don't recall any issues going from 4.5x to 4.6x. The bugs were that the software would not load, and the system would go into diagnostics mode or go into a loop always showing the globe.
You should be fine upgrading from 4.5x to 4.64, especially 4.64 as the problem child was 4.62 which often times had the problem.

There are no bugs in 4.63 (I dont have 4.64 yet to comment about it) Verion 4.62 causes the Nav system in some cars to dump into a diagnostic menu. Also, on systems which did not have boot issues, verion 4.62 still takes longer to load than 4.55 or 4.56. The boot delay problem doesnt happen on 4.63.

Here's an interesting piece of info taken from someone's ebay auction for the 4.63 disc. The seller claims the only upgrade feature of 4.63 over the 4.62 version is coverage area. It supposedly adds a button in the Map/Guide/Menu/Cancel Maintenance area called coverage area. And that allows you to change it to Hawaii.
Now I happen to have 4.63 and previously had 4.62, and I can also tell you the 4.63 disc boots faster to the "OK" screen than 4.62.

IIRC, the coverage area used to be a function that could only be done by the dealer (unless you know the secret code to get into diagnostics).
The changing of coverage area would wipe out all the data accumulated in the current area. I am guessing that means previous destinations, bread crumbs, etc.
I wonder if this will still happen now that you have a coverage area button, not that many of us are going to go back and forth between HI and the mainland.
I did not look closely at the descriptions of 4.64 and 4.62 in the acuranavi website, but they looked pretty much the same, especially the coverage additions areas, which leads me to wonder if they will have a 2008 update in the fall.

one of the members bought a v.4.70 disc off ebay and I'm guessing that is the 2009 update disc which should show up soon on Alpine's website. I doubted all along that v.4.62 and 4.63 were the "true" update disc but rather were small incrimental software updates.
I spoke to someone too that bought a 4.70. He said it still had Zagat 2007 so I'm not so sure. I get the feeling it is 4.70 just because it came in an 09 car.
The '05 model cant be upgraded directly to 4.6x, you have to do it in two steps. First, an incremental upgrade using either a 4.3x or 4.5x DVD disc. Then after you've done this, you can then install the 4.6x disc.
Version 1.15 is likely the software version showing up on the nav system when you do system info request. There is another version on the disc itself, which should be the so called White disc, version 4.xx
Post your version 4.xx here and I sure someone can help you.
Of course, you can always go to the official source, the Acura Navigation Update site, and get the official story. I don't know, but I expect they will tell you that your upgrade path is to purchase 4.64, which will take you up from your likely version, 4.1x, without having to do all the upgrades in series, 4.1x ==>4.3x==>4.5x==>4.6x.
You ought to ask whether they expect another update soon, as they traditionally update in the fall, but things got so screwed up, they may not bother, or move it to the spring.
Post that info too!

Let me understand this. If I order the 4.64 directly, its not plug and play? I didn't read this anywhere on the alpine website. I guess its a good thing I visit this board.
As always, I would call Alpine and ask specific questions. Give them very specific information on what you have now, and ask the specific questions. They do have a money back policy, so if it does not work, at least you won't be out the money, just the hassle.
Then post the info for the rest of us, and let us know what you finally do.
We know that upgrading directly from one version to another was an issue with 4.62, which is why they stopped selling it shortly after release.
We believe that 4.63 was released with new car models, such as the TSX, and that 4.64 is the consumer version of the same, but supposedly with bug fixes that alleviate the 4.62 upgrade issues.
I am running OK on 4.62 on my 2006 after initial problems upgrading from 4.3x. It was fixed through info with this board, and adjustments at the dealer so I have not bothered to do anything with 4.64.
Thanks
Chris
