can anyone explain to me the deal with nav updating?

I see bunch of firmware and version numbers flying around and not following it lol

I just bought 05 RL shawdy with probably original navdvd in it

 

Take out the DVD in the trunk and read the version number. If it is before 4.13c, then you need an updated disc that also has the firmware upgrade. If the disc is a later version than that, then you can put whatever map disc you want in there.

If you buy a legitimate map disc and say it's for a 2005, it will come with the update disc included. If you buy second hand, there are no guarantees.

does it give any more functionality if I upgrade to any newer versions?

 

The only "upgrades" at this point are new road and business inclusions. You won't gain any functionality.
