Navigation 2012 in late sept
From Acura
"Important Notice: The New 2012 DVD Map Update will be available by the end of September."
Has anyone heard of the updates on the 2012 version?
Is it worth the cost or should I save my coin and buy the 2011 v4.92 for $50.00
Thanks

The "is it worth it" really depends on whether you're living in a well-mapped area or one that has many updates. When the new one comes out, they'll list the updates by area, so you can evaluate whether it's something you need.

if you are going to be buying a copy of a 4.92 disc, you might as well make your own - i recently "obtained" a 4.92 disc image by common electronic networking methods and burned my own copy and saved myself the 50 bones for the service that others are gouging with.

For those of you who have a 2005 model year navigation system, you MUST get the firmware update from an earlier disc before you can use any of the newer white label discs (4.71_ and newer if I am not mistaken).

I know I got as far as burning a copy and installing it in the car, but it never actually booted up after the install.
Can you confirm it actually works?

As far as I know, this is what the $50 versions get you. No one is selling you an original, genuine 4.92 disc for $50.

When the new 2012 disc comes out will Navteq lower the cost of the 2011 disc?

I can't see spending the $185 just to have the crumbs disappear. There are a lot of threads started on this topic and it seems that there is about a 50% approval/disapproval of the newer disks. I'll sit on the fence a little longer

I'll probably just shell out the dough for the new disc. I'm pretty sure my 06 has the original nav disc in it.

After updating to 4.31C, the 4.92 disc that I downloaded and burned worked flawlessly, and i didnt have to load it manually even.
tl;dr - i downloaded two separate disc versions, 4.31C and 4.92. I updated in sequence, and all worked well.
for this process to work, you must have a DVD burner that can manually set the booktype of a DVD+R DL.
in any case, i feel weird talking about downloaded/torrented nav discs and beating the system. if anyone has any questions PLEASE PM ME and/or EMAIL ME! brinox at gmail dot com

The updating issues are only on the 2005 models, right? The reason I ask is that I'm about to buy the 2012 dis and I'm pretty sure my 06 still has the original nav disc in it.

im pretty sure its only on the 05 rl. i have a 05 rl and couldn't use the 2011 disc cause i was updating from the orignal that came with the car. maybe some 06 models were affected. the problem was daylight saving; all dealers were suppose to upgrade the software in teh navigation but no one ever did it for my rl but my uncle works at honda and did the update for me and then when i popped in the new disc it installed the new update and gave me teh maps.
so technically, the new 2011 disc (guessing it goes the same for the upcoming 2012) could not update from the first software; cause it can only update from after the FIXED UPDATE DISC that the dealers have. even my acura dealer service couldn't tell me this. i was kinda pissed they didn't do the update for me and i had to figure it out some other way.

Just to clarify, if you happen to have a 2005 model year RL or MDX rear DVD disc drive, white label disc versions 4.71x and newer will not update the firmware on these drives because they simply dont have the firmware update anymore. supposedly disc versions previous to 4.71x DO have the firmware update (i can verify that 4.31C does work) and will allow the drive to work with the later disc versions without incident.
Once you update the firmware from the firmware update disc OR one of these older data disc versions, you won't need to worry about any incompatibility at least for version 4.92

Just ordered the 2012 V4.A2 update disc for $149+shipping. It says it will be available "late September" and will ship then. I know there are some out of date areas around me that will be fixed with this update. Will I see any differences in the actual interface? I've noticed some people reporting better resolution after doing an update.

That was fast. Received a shipment confirmation from Navteq today. The new nav disc will be here Wednesday.

The main reason to update is if there are a lot of POI's in your area or road construction changes that you may require the system to access. Otherwise the update is a lot of money for 99% useless information which is already out of date by the time that you can purchase it.
The only way to go in the future is an online 4G system utilizing, for example, Google maps and traffic. The only advantage to our old systems is when there is no reception we still have an accessible database from the Nav DVD.

The way they price these between US and Canada is pretty funny...the US map is $149, but I can order the two disc US+Canada set for only $179 Canadian. Since I never drive into the US (just fly in) the US disc is useless to me, but apparently worth $149 to someone south of the border? LOL
