NAVI 4.73 WILL NOT WORK on 05 RL
Hey guys, I'm not an RL owner but thought I'd give some input since my car uses the same white disc. I have tried to unsuccessfully backup a 4.73 disc. I think Alpine has done something to prevent copying. What happens is that when the copied disc is loaded, the Navi does the software update but upon restart, it displays an error about incorrect disc. Frustrating because 4.63 worked without a hitch. I'm familiar with creating ISO's and dvd+r book-typing, Verbatim media, yada yada, tried it all. My theory is that they've implemented whatever they used in the orange 3.x disc (which a lot of people seem to have trouble copying).
I have an '05 that had had never been updated. I was still running the original 4.13a. This evening I received and installed my new 4.73a update with no issues. Because I had such an old version, I had to first run the "Navigation update setup disc for 05/06 Models" then I was able to install the 4.73a update.

Is there anything I should be on the look out for regarding the "Navigation update setup disc for 05/06 Models" you mentioned? I assume this is included in the package.
I just went from 4.12 to 4.73a with no issues in my 05.

Hello everyone! I have been lurking since I got my 05 Black RL in April and finally decided to register.
I have a quick question on this subject for anyone who can help. I just checked my system and it is the old 4.13 version so from what I am reading I will need the set up disk before the software disk.
I have a friend who works at Acura and can get me the 4.73 disk but I was wondering how to get the set up disk? Once you use it can it be reused on another vehicle? If so does anyone still have one that I could acquire? I couldn't find any on ebay.
Thanks for the help!

The additional disc loads flash upgrades to the NAVI which enables the jump from 4.1X to 4.7x. That disc is not single use. Once your NAVI updates the NAVI flash using that disc, you should be able to load the 4.73 disc.
As an alternative, if you have access to a 4.3X disc you should be able to step from 4.1 => 4.3 => 4.7
The 4.7 software was apparently not fully regression tested to NAVIs running earlier than 4.3 versions and would have forced owners to upgrade every version release (not realistic). So if you want to jump from 4.1 to 4.7 you need the supplemental disc.
Let's hope future NAVI versions will be compatible with EVERY previous version.

Ok great! Let me know if he still wants to use it. We are both in Virginia so it should be a fast swap.
So the other route is to find a 4.3 edition and just install that? The 4.3 did not come with a separate set up disk, only a data disk?
Correct. The 4.3X is a single disc. It is typically the version that came in the 06 RLs.
The second disc for the 4.73 version is to allow 4.1X (05 RLs) to jump up to 4.73 without the intermediate 4.3X version.
Again, an alternative route would be to upgrade to 4.3X (single disc) then you can upgrade to 4.73 without the second disc.

I do need it. The system wont let me PM for the first 15 days. I can you my email: tbennett83@aol.com. Just shoot me over an email and I will send you my address. Thanks!
If anyone needs a fully-working 4.31 or 4.63 disk feel free to PM me.
4.73 has copy-protection. Plain and simple.
Can it be hacked/copied? Of course it can, but not by noobs like us.

I am not willing to send out any copies of pirated disks if it means getting banned, plain and simple. Sorry
Dude, you saved my rear. Thanks!
Press and hold "map/guide", "cancel", and "menu" simultaneously for several seconds and you will access the Nav setup screen. From there, you have to select navi version (I forget what the precise name of the menu option is but it's something like that) and the system will give you the option to download whichever version of the software is on the DVD you have installed, in this case your 4.63 so you can downgrade.
I have an issue getting my 4.73a dvd nav disc to work in my 2005 rl. It's my understanding I either need a patch disc or I need to jump in increments, meaning go from my current 4.13b version to a 4.3x version, then to the 4.73a version. Can anyone help me.
Thanks, Kris
Thanks, Kris

Patch or jump from lower version to get 4.73a to work in 2005rl
Has anyone fully figured out why the updated nav disc 4.73a will work in some 2005 rl's and not in others. i need some help. My 2005 currently has 4.13b version and I just bought a 4.73a version which only flashes in the initial screen and will not boot up. Please advise. Thanks, Kris
If I recall, if you told Alpine you had a 2005 RL, they would send you two discs, one to do the flash upgrades from 2005 to current standard, and then the 4.7x disc. If you neglected to tell them, and you call them up, and you are listed as a licensee, they will send you the second disk for free, because depending on the year, newer cars did not necessarily need the flash upgrade.
Hello everyone!
I was messing around earlier with the Navi and went from original 05 Rl DVD to 4.31c then 4.62 both of them worked at first and then..
The FACTORY DIAGNOSTIC SCREEN "IN LINE DIAG" screen would not go away. Didnt know what was going on so i dropped back down to original and it persisted.
So did a little reading in the Navigation System Manual and found this.
When a navigation control unit is powered up for the first time at the factory, the "factory diagnosis" screen
(In Line Diag) shows up. Normally the factory performs the steps necessary to verify proper operation and
terminate the "factory diagnostic".
Until the proper confirmation sequence is performed, the screen will show up every time the vehicle is
started.
And the solution is:
Follow the steps below to prevent the screen from showing up in the future:
Hold down the buttons (Menu + Map/Guide + Cancel) for about 5 seconds (the "Select Diagnosis
items" screen appears).
Hold down the Map/Guide button for 5-10 seconds (a screen with a "Complete" button, appears).
Touch "Complete", and then the "Return" button (the system may re-boot).
Restart the vehicle, and confirm normal operation by completing the "TQI of the Navigation System"
Service Bulletin.
I'll try the same incrimental increase later right now the wife is pissed at me.

4.73a Nav disc installation seems resolved 2005rl
I stopped in at our local Honda dealer and explained my plight to a guy in the service department. I told him I had a version 4.13b in my rl and needed to jump up a version between this version and the new 4.73a version I had bought. It told him I had an odd request to borrow a nav disc from one of their used vehicles in stock. He had no trouble in letting me borrow a nav disc out of a 2007 accord, verson 4.55. I loaded this disc into my rl and info uploaded. I then returned the disc back to him and loaded my 4.73a version which loaded and worked without a hitch. The Honda dealer (Jason) wouldn't take a nickel for this service. I did donate a ten spot to their donut found. Oh by the way the dealership was the Honda Motorwerks in LaCrosse, WI. Hope this post helps someone.
I had the same problem going from 4.31a to 4.64. FYI, here's how to get rid of the "In Line Diag" screen:
* Hold down the Menu+Map/Guide+Cancel buttons for about 5 seconds to get into the "Select Diagnosis" screen.
* Hold down the Map/Guide button for 5 to 10 seconds until you get a screen with a "Complete" button.
* Select "Complete" then "Return" (the system may reboot).
* Restart the car and everything should be fine.
