nav display night dimming

I can't believe that I haven't noticed this before in almost 5 years of driving my RL. I always thought the Navi screen dimmed for night driving at the same time the auto headlights come on. However, driving home the other night, my lights came on and the Navi was still bright. It later dimmed independently when it got darker out.
I have recently upgraded to 4.72, but would not think that that would be a feature upgrade. Has this always been there and I haven't noticed?
Cool feature in any case.

It was always there as a feature. Did you know you can make it do that on your own, regardless of light?

if you have your brightness maxed out it doesn't dim so you might have just had your brightness up all the way

If you manually change the brightness, it won't automatically dim when the lights come on until you restart the car. At least that's how mine works.

yes - I know about the manual way of sequencing through night, light, off. I had just never noticed it not dim at the same time the lights come on. Have not adjsuted my brightness setting for years.

The light sensor must have 2 stages, one to trigger headlights, and one to trigger both headlights and NAVI screen?

I have had my headlights come on in an overcast sky or just in an underpass but not trigger the NAVI screen.

But in very dark daylight situations, such as a parking garage, both systems trigger.

I am not sure, but I think the GPS and 'solar sensing' attribute of the climate control are aware of sundown, as I notice my NAVI changes almost like clockwork at sundown.

Perhaps the light sensor on the dash is working in concert with the GPS.

solved my mystery. The person who said if instrument display on full bright was right.
I had my car in for service and when they wiped the dash they must have put it on full bright. I checked when Navi would not dim. Now it does dim at the same time lights come on.
