E-012: Backup Sensors

Are the parts required for the factory backup sensors option kit still available? I found a couple posts where peope did a DIY to install these, but nothing with any detailed instructions?

Detailed instructions are available on line, and when you buy the kit. Basically, I think you remove the bumper, drill holes in it and install the sensors. Go onto My Acura and look for the e-store. I think the instructions are available there. Our traditional place has been screwed down tight by Acura.

I am interested to know the use of these sensors if you have a camera. My 05 has neither but the newer models like my 2010 MDX has a great camera with 3 zoom levels and I cannot justify the sensors AND the camera.

The biggest issue for me making me doubt the camera is the poor brightness of the LCD screen when it is cold outside and the screen hasn't been on for at least 5 or 10 minutes. We haven't even gotten really cold yet (just around freezing) and the LCD display is not going to be bright enough to see much backing up unless it's quite sunny out (and yes the brightness is cranked, it's plenty bright after the panel warms up). Which won't help in the parking garage at work when I leave after work at night where I most need to know what is behind me LOL

It seems that the camera sensitivity and the screen implementation is the issue because my MDX at night is no problem.

Parking sensors are great help. Camera is ok, but it misrepresents the distance. Also screen in dashboard may be almost blind when sunshine is realy bright.

Can someone post a pic of the RL rear bumper with these installed? Just curious how noticeable the "dots" are...I've seen some vehicles with them that don't look so hot....

Those with 09 + RL's can chime in but my MDX has 3 zoom settings with ident lines for distance and is easy to judge distance. Full zoom enables me to park my receiver hitch ball exactly under the trailer and the mid zoom allows me to back up, when parking, to a couple of inches. I don't think that the sensors give you that kind of resolution of distance but they do give you a warning if you forget to check your mirror.

I added a BU camera to my 05 with no problems. It cost me about $400 ($310 for interface, plus $90 for camera). Why wouldn't you do that instead of BU sensors?

If you really want sensors and are afraid of butcher your bumper, what about one of these:

I have one of these units that I never installed on my Explorer. If you want it, it's yours for $25 plus shipping. I'll send you photos if you're interested.

Here's the camera I bought:

I followed the same guidelines outlined by 470hpgs400 in this forum:

He (470HPGS400) mentions the NAVtool for $180. This would make the whole project less than $260. If I recall, that's less than the backup sensors mentioned in this thread.
