A/C fan issue
A/C fan issue
I have an '06 RL and have encountered difficulty with manual control of the fan speed.
I have several times wished to turn down the fan speed manually when just too much air seems to be blowing out for the conditions or if a passenger just wants less air flow. I hit the panel fan button which causes the manual A/C settings page to appear on the display. If I then rotate the main dial (not sure of its correct name) to the left, the fan speed does go down and the setting change is shown on the display.
But, as soon as the fan speed is manually slowed, it seems that the A/C compressor is switched off and the display's A/C icon (to the left of the fan speed information) immediately goes off. This is unwanted behavior. In order to turn the compressor back on again, I have to move the main dial again a couple of (I can't remember now how exactly).
It seems to take about 6 or 7 different button pushes in order to accomplish the simple task of turning the fan down a notch. This is all very distracting while driving.
Is this the correct procedure or is there a simpler way? Thanks.

You may be pressing the button in when lowering the fan speed. Pressing the selector button in toggles the A/C on and off. When I lower the fan speed using the dial the A/C compressor never shuts off.
ed,
Are you tapping / pushing the interface dial when after you rotate the knob to the esired fan setting? You need not push the dial, just rotate to the desired fan setting. Pushing the knob turns the A/C on or off (as highlighted in the upper left hand corner of the screen).
I had this issue and discovered it was due to me rotating the dial and then, unconciously pressing the knob as an <ENTER>. I think many of the functions require you to press the knob to select or enter your seletion, but this is not one of them. It may have you trained to press it even if you should not.

I tested both methods, which work fine. Thanks again.
You guys both hit the nail on the head. I must have been instinctively hitting the button in a futile attempt to "enter" the information and hopefully turn the display back to its normal state (either map display or off).
I guess the quickest way to exit the A/C screen is to press the Cancel button or Map button on the console, right? That requires taking eyes off the road again - grrrr.
I know the voice command is easier, but I'm still having trouble getting used to the idea of talking to a car and I want a backup method!

You can also hit the back button on the steering wheel, next to the voice command button. It serves the same purpose as the cancel button and does not require you to take your eyes off the road.
That is one thing about this car, there are usually two or three ways to do things depending on if you want to use voice, or not, and there is always a way for the passenger to participate just using the buttons and the control knob.
